1
L.O. Identify what the Bible says about Gods
attitude towards people with leprosy.Identify
things we are thankful for.
2
Learning outcomes
  • To be thankful for what we have.
  • To use sacred text to learn about God.

3
Overview
  • Share with the children that it is World Leprosy
Week from 26 to the 30 of January. This year The
Leprosy Mission is focusing on a project in
Chanchaga, a rural village in Nigeria. In RE we
are going to look at one person in particular who
is affected by leprosy and see if we can find out
Gods attitude towards people with leprosy.

4
Amina
  • What can you see in the picture?
  • What stands out to you about the picture?
  • What do you think Amina is thinking?
  • What would you like to ask Amina?

5
Arminas story
  • Amina is approximately 65 years old and first
noticed signs of leprosy 35 years ago. It
started with patches all over her back and then
her hand. Like many in this community, she went
to a traditional healer but the treatment she was
    given had no effect.
  • Years later, she was advised to come to Okegbala
hospital for treatment. She received multi-drug
therapy (MDT) which cured the leprosy, but sadly
it was too late to prevent disability. Amina has
severely disabled hands and feet. This makes
life very difficult for her, and daily tasks are
    fraught with danger.

6
Arminas story cont
  • She has lost all sensation in her hands and
feet, which means that injury can occur if care
is not taken. Amina has to use gloves when
cooking so that she doesnt burn herself. She
also wears protective shoes to prevent cuts and
    ulcers on her feet.
  • Despite her age and disability, Amina wanted the
opportunity to become independent. She received
a loan from The Leprosy Mission (TLM) which
enabled her to buy five goats. She will breed
the goats and sell them to community members for
further breeding and also for food.

  • How does hearing her story make you feel?

Ten Healed of Leprosy
Luke Chapter 17 Verses 11 to 17
  • Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled
along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As
he was going into a village, ten men who had
leprosy met him. They stood at a distance and
called out in a loud voice, "Jesus, Master, have
pity on us!"  When he saw them, he said, "Go,
show yourselves to the priests." And as they
    went, they were cleansed.
  • One of them, when he saw he was healed, came
back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw
himself at Jesus' feet and thanked himand he was
    a Samaritan.
  •   Jesus asked, "Were not all ten cleansed? Where
are the other nine? Was no one found to return
and give praise to God except this foreigner?"
Then he said to him, "Rise and go your faith has
    made you well."

9
Activity one
  • What do the people with leprosy call Jesus?
  • Why do you think they call him that?
  • What do they ask him to do?
  • How does he respond?
  • Does this reveal his heart for people with
    leprosy?
  • Do you think he would have a similar heart for
    people with other problems?
  • Which person affected by leprosy comes back to
    say thank you?
  • Jesus clearly wants people to be thankful. What
is so amazing about Amina being thankful?

10
Discuss answers
  • As you discuss the answers remember that our
objective today is to identify what Gods
attitude is towards people with leprosy.

11
Being more thankful
  • Does this make you appreciate what you have?
  • What have you complained about today?
  • Could we be more thankful?
  • When we look at Amina we notice she has lost her
fingers making it almost impossible for her to
    use her hand.
  • Hands are amazing think of all the things you
    can do with your hands.

12
Activity two
  • Draw around your hand and write inside all the
    things you are thankful for.

13
Challenge Questions
  • Christians believe Jesus is the son of God. He
carried out many miracles and could do amazing
things. It is likely he already knew that only
one of the men with leprosy would return to say
thank you. What does that tell us about his
    heart?
  • If you knew a friend was not going to thank you
for something you were going to do for them would
    you do it anyway? Why?
  • How could we encourage each other to be more
    thankful?

14
Plenary
  • Ask the children to share what they are thankful
    for.
  • Highlight how it is so easy to take things for
    granted.
  • Reinforce what we have learnt about Jesus heart
    for people with leprosy.
  • If you have time you could finish with the
    further questions below.
