1
Obadiah A Message of Gods Justice
  • January 20

2
What do you think?
  • What are some characteristics of a person who is
    a victim?
  • The people of Judah were victimized by the people
of Edom at a vulnerable point in Judahs history.
  • Obadiah prophesied against Edom, against a people
    who victimized others.
  • Today we consider how we treat victims in our
    culture including victims of abortion.

3
Listen for what would happen to Edom
  • Obadiah 11-4 (NIV) The vision of Obadiah. This
is what the Sovereign Lord says about Edom-- We
have heard a message from the Lord An envoy was
sent to the nations to say, "Rise, and let us go
against her for battle"-- 2 "See, I will make
you small among the nations you will be utterly
    despised.

4
Listen for what would happen to Edom
  • 3 The pride of your heart has deceived you, you
who live in the clefts of the rocks and make your
home on the heights, you who say to yourself,
'Who can bring me down to the ground?' 4 Though
you soar like the eagle and make your nest among
the stars, from there I will bring you down,"
    declares the Lord.

5
A Nations Attitude
  • What was the command given in verse 1?
  • What would happen to Edoms pride?
  • The Edomites and the Israelites shared an old,
negative family history. How do longtime family
problems affect the spiritual health of the
    Christian church?
  • How do churches sometimes show pride and
overconfidence with regard to other churches.

6
A Nations Attitude
  • How do churches sometimes show pride and
    overconfidence with regard to culture?
  • What happens when we do nothing but wring our
hands and shake our heads in despair?
  • What part can you and I have in how our country
    behaves?

7
Listen for what happens on the day of the Lord.
  • Obadiah 110-15 (NIV) Because of the violence
against your brother Jacob, you will be covered
with shame you will be destroyed forever. 11
On the day you stood aloof while strangers
carried off his wealth and foreigners entered his
gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were like
one of them. 12 You should not look down on
your brother in the day of his misfortune,

8
Listen for what happens on the day of the Lord.
  • nor rejoice over the people of Judah in the day
of their destruction, nor boast so much in the
day of their trouble. 13 You should not march
through the gates of my people in the day of
their disaster, nor look down on them in their
calamity in the day of their disaster,

9
Listen for what happens on the day of the Lord.
  • nor seize their wealth in the day of their
disaster. 14 You should not wait at the
crossroads to cut down their fugitives, nor hand
over their survivors in the day of their trouble.
15 "The day of the Lord is near for all
nations. As you have done, it will be done to
you your deeds will return upon your own head.

10
A Nations Failure to Act
  • What bad attitudes did Edom have?
  • How had Edom shown aggressiveness?
  • According to verses 15 and 16, how would God
    judge all rebellious nations?

11
A Nations Failure to Act
  • The Edomites were indifferent to Judahs plight.
To what problems of our culture are we sometimes
    indifferent?
  • How can believers demonstrate value to lives that
even believers sometimes devalue by this
    indifference?

12
Listen for a message of hope.
  • Obadiah 117-18 (NIV) But on Mount Zion will be
deliverance it will be holy, and the house of
Jacob will possess its inheritance. 18 The
house of Jacob will be a fire and the house of
Joseph a flame the house of Esau will be
stubble, and they will set it on fire and consume

13
Listen for a message of hope.
  • it. There will be no survivors from the house of
Esau." The Lord has spoken. Obadiah 121 (NIV)
Deliverers will go up on Mount Zion to govern the
mountains of Esau. And the kingdom will be the
    Lord's.

14
A Nations Hope
  • How would Israel be delivered?
  • What would the Lord establish?
  • What do these verses teach us about Gods
    sovereignty?

15
A Nations Hope
  • What should these truths about God declare to
people today whether a victim or an arrogant
    rebel against God?
  • Suppose you take an active role in confronting
injustice. Why is it important to have an
    ongoing close relationship with God?

Victim Arrogant Rebel
