1
The Quadrilateral Family
  • Nov 17, 2009

2
Our Goals
  • Today, we will
  • Learn about the quadrilateral family of shapes
  • Name shapes by their sides and angles
  • Put the shapes in their immediate families based
    upon their properties
  • GLEs addressed
  • Form and test ideas about quadrilaterals

3
Quadrilaterals
  • A polygon that has exactly four sides that form a
    closed shape
  • The sum of the interior angles is 360º

4
Parallelogram
  • 1. Both pairs of opposite sides are parallel and
    congruent.
  • 2. Diagonals bisect each other.

5
Trapezoid
  • 1. One pair of opposite sides are parallel

6
Kites
  • 1. Two pairs of adjacent sides are congruent.
  • 2. Diagonals intersect at right angles.
  • 3. One diagonal bisects the other.

7
Rectangle
  • 1. Both pairs of opposite sides are parallel and
    congruent.
  • 2. Diagonals bisect each other and are congruent.
  • 3. Has four right angles.

8
Rhombus
  • 1. Both pairs of opposite sides are parallel.
  • 2. All sides are congruent.
  • 3. Diagonals bisect each other and are congruent.

9
Isosceles Trapezoid
  • 1. One pair of opposite sides are parallel.
  • 2. Non parallel sides are congruent.
  • 3. Diagonals are congruent.

10
Square
  • 1. Both pairs of opposite sides are parallel.
  • 2. All sides are congruent.
  • 3. Diagonals bisect each other and are congruent.
  • 4. Has four right angles.

11
ACTIVITY!!
  • Complete the quadrilateral family worksheet
  • All the shapes we learned about today are related
in some way. Use your notes to fill out the
worksheet to discover their close and distant
    relatives.
  • Complete the quadrilateral family characteristics
    worksheet
  • Fill in each box with the name of the shape based
    on the 1st worksheet
  • Write the properties for each in their box
  • Properties that are shared among the shapes do
not need to be written twice

12
  • Complete the quadrilateral family pictures
    worksheet
  • Label each of the vertices with a letter
  • Label each diagram with the visual representation
    of its properties
  • Write the expression for each property next to
    the picture
  • Complete the Venn diagram given
