  • JEANERATION
  • Young people all around the world have many
things in common their music, their language,
their ideas. However, there is nothing more
universal than jeans. Jeans are not a privilege
of modern generations. In the 15th century, the
sailors from Genoa were the first to wear heavy
cotton pants. They needed those durable and
practical cotton pants to work on their ships.
Our modern term jeans comes from the Genoese
sailor. Later, during the Gold Rush, Levi-Strauss
arrived in California with a roll of heavy canvas
under his arm. He created the blue jeans and made
a fortune. Until World War II, blue jeans were
popular among farmers and cowboys, construction
workers and people in the country and small towns
of The United States. In the forties, some
artists and young people wore blue jeans because
they were practical, cheap and a kind of
political protest. Then came the fifties with
Marlon Brando, James Dean and motorcycle movies.
Jeans became a synonym of bad and schools
banned them. In the sixties, jeans became very
popular not only in the USA but all over the
world. They were a symbol of youth. Today,
however, they are no longer a privilege of a
generation or class everybody wears jeans.

  • JORGE AND MIGUELS LAST ERROR
  • Jorge took his family to the U.S.A. But at
Customs in Miami his children were not permitted
to entrance. Jorge had registered them on the
visa documents at the American Consulate as 3
sons. But they were not 3 sons, they were 1 son
and 2 daughters! On the same flight was Miguel.
He was not permitted entrance into U.S.A too.
Because on his visa documents he had written as
his occupation PHYSICIAN. But at the U.S
Customs his employment document proved that he
was a PHYSICIST. That same day the PHYSICIST
Miguel accompanied Jorge and his family on the
    return flight to Portugal.

  • FAST AND SLOW FOOD
  • Another term for junk food is fast food. This
comes from fast food restaurants that serve
inexpensive meals quickly in paper bags or boxes.
Now there is the slow food movement. It was
founded in the 1980s by Carlo Petrini, an Italian
journalist who discovered a new McDonalds
restaurant in Romes famous piazza di spagna. He
was horrified and founded the slow food movement,
which had two basic beliefs the importance of
traditional cooking methods and the use of local
ingredients. The slow food movement now has over
80,000 members in over 100 countries.

  • SOCORROS LAST ERROR
  • Socorro was very disappointed. It was her
second day teaching Portuguese to the new U.S.
Ambassadors 5 children in Lisbon. On the first
day teaching the group she talked about the
importance of doing homework. Then she gave them
a list of verbs. She thought she had told them to
decorate the list. In fact she promised them
presents if they did a good job. At the beginning
of the second class she gave them a test on the
verbs, but they all got 0,0 on the test! Socorro
thought, incredible! They must be idiots!
Finally she declared, I desist. If none of you
can learn one verb then I am wasting my time and
your time. Im not going to teach you anymore!
You can find someone else, cause Im leaving!
But Miss Socorro, the students exclaimed, you
didnt tell us to study the verb list for
homework. You told us to decorate it! And they
showed the verb lists all very artfully designed.
