Introduction

• Welcome! The historical society has asked for
  help. They need students to complete a few
  researching tasks pertaining to ancient Roman art
  and architecture. After completion of the
  research they have asked for each student to
  create a collage representing your favorite art
  and architectural works of ancient Rome. I told
  the society I would make this a class project,
  and reward upon completion, a homework pass in
  addition to your earned grade.

• You will be able to identify specific Roman art
  and architectural works.
• You will create a collage of your favorite art
  and architectural works.

First
Before you continue please open a word processing
program such as Microsoft Word or Appleworks.
You will need to document information and turn it
into your teacher.

• For your first task the historical society has
  asked you to go to here The Ancient City of Rome
• Browse this site to become familiar with the
  different types of Roman art and architecture.
• Choose one art or architectural piece from the
  website and copy the picture to your word or
  appleworks document. Beneath the picture write a
  description of the piece.

• Your second task is to visit the website
  Colossuem.
• Read the information on the website pertaining to
  the Colossuem - Flavian Amphitheater.
• Below your first task on your word or appleworks
  document paste a picture of the Colossuem.
  Beneath the picture answer the following
  questions in complete sentences
• -Why was the Colossuem built?
• - Describe the early amphitheaters.
• - How did the Colossuem get its name?
• - What was the size of the Colossuem?

• Go to the following website Exploring Ancient
  Word Cultures
• As you read the information focus on why the
  Karanis excavation provided a useful summary
  statement about the culture of Rome.
• Below the second task on your word or appleworks
  document, write 3-4 sentences describing how the
  extravagant paintings found in the Karanis
  excavation related to Roman culture and social
  status.

• Go to the following website Roman Architecture
• Below your third task on your word or appleworks
  document answer the following question
• -What were the three new ideas ancient Romans
  brought to architecture?
• Paste a picture of each of the three types of
  architecture from the question above. Label each
  picture.

-For the final task the historical society would
like you to create an ancient Roman art and
architecture collage. -You may use any software
program you are comfortable with. The collage
should cover the entire paper (not white
showing). -To find pictures use the links given
to you in the previous tasks. -You can also find
great Roman art and Architecture at the following

Conclusion
Art and architecture played an important role in
the culture of ancient Rome. Rome was a
cosmopolitan capital where high-living and
material wealth become synonymous with personal
importance and success. After completion if this
WebQuest you will hopefully have a greater
appreciation for ancient Roman art and
Architecture.
