What does it mean to green a fleet?

• Greening gasoline car fleets
• Increasing fuel efficiency in our cars and
  trucks is one of the most important steps that we
  can take to break our cycle of dependence on
  foreign oil
• Climate change which if left unchecked will
  result in violent conflict, terrible storms,
  shrinking coastlines and irreversible
  catastrophes

Gasoline Particulates

• New data show that PM number emissions from
  modern gasoline cars--including "normal emitters
  at high speed and load" and cars with "worn
  engines with high oil consumption"--may "equal or
  exceed diesel PM levels,"
• Since the U.S. highway vehicle fleet burns about
  three times more gasoline than diesel, and since
  gasoline vehicles are now proven to emit
  substantial amounts of PM and "toxics," the
  current exclusive regulatory crackdown on diesel
  vehicle PM doesn't quite hit the clean-air
  bull's-eye, scientific studies indicate.

Cost of Air Pollution

• Study California Dirty Air Kills More Than
  Crashes
• To illustrate its point, the study noted that the
  California Highway Patrol recorded 2,521
  vehicular deaths in the San Joaquin Valley and
  South Coast Air Basin in 2006, compared to 3,812
  deaths attributed to respiratory illness caused
  by particulate pollution.
• The study, which examined the costs of air
  pollution in two areas with the worst levels in
  the country, also said meeting federal ozone and
  fine particulate standards could save 28 billion
  annually in health care costs, school absences,
  missed work and lost income potential from
  premature deaths.
