Most Important Lessons Learned from the Bandit
Pager Project
  • Keeping the teams working effectively and
    efficiently.
  • Piltch, director of manufacturing operations,
Created a sense of urgency. If you dont have a
    crisis, create a few.
  • Stayed focused on developing as few new
    technologies as possible.
  • Clean slate mentality, thinking more globally.
  • Maintaining a working relationship with
    Suppliers.
  • Keep the number of suppliers to a minimum.
  • Motorola discovered their specifications for
orders we outdated, poorly written, and
    confusing. Motorola didnt even understand
everything that made up some of their orders.
  • To fix it Motorola had to rewrite all the specs
and make them short, simple, and easy to
understand. Once this was completed it would be
much easier to demand more quality from the
    suppliers.

3
Most Important Lessons Learned from the Bandit
Pager Project
  • Technical problem solving and flexibility
  • Flexibility was a key factor in making the Bandit
    project a success.
  • Statistical real-time process control gives the
workers immediate feedback on how everything is
    going.
  • This will allow a much faster tracking and
    identification of problems.
  • It will also be able to track trends and
    anticipate problems and avoid them.
  • Transferring the knowledge gained through the
Bandit project throughout the division of the
    company.
  • Communication between divisions, suppliers, and
    demand.
  • With adequate resources and clear goals,
    ambitious targets can be reached.

What areas offer the greatest opportunity for
leveraging learning and applying it in future
manufacturing processes?
  • June 1986
  • Operation Bandit called for the development and
implementation of a fully automated pager line
for the Bravo pager within 18 months.
  • Piltch introduced a new contract book
    containing revised standard operating procedures
that clearly stated responsibilities and goals.
  • December 1987
  • Operation Bandit complete engineers designed a
pager that could be produced within 72 minutes
from the time an order came in through any
    Motorola sales office.
  • Two days ago . . .
