Title: Sexual Disorders

1
Chapter 16
  • Sexual Disorders

2
Paraphilias
  • Atypical sexual behaviors (defined by DSM-IV)
    that involve
  • 1) non-human objects
  • 2) non-consenting adults
  • 3) suffering or the humiliation of the person or
    the persons partner
  • 4) children
  • Can broadly be described as two categories
    consent vs. non-consent

3
Paraphilias
  • Sex acts are the primary forms of sexual arousal.
  • Sexual acts may appear compulsive.
  • May engage in these acts regardless of severity
    of consequences.

4
Paraphilias
  • Fetishism
  • Use of inanimate objects as preferred source of
    arousal.
  • Transvestism
  • Sexual sadism
  • Sexual gratification through inflicting pain on
    another.
  • Sexual masochism
  • Sexual gratification obtained through
experiencing pain at the hand of ones partner.

5
Paraphilias
  • Voyeurism
  • Arousal obtained through secretly watching
    another engaging in some act.
  • Exhibitionism
  • Sexual gratification is obtained by exposing
    ones genitals to non-consenting observers.
  • Frotteurism
  • Gratification obtained by rubbing ones genitals
against a non-consenting other or fondling
    anothers body.

6
Pedophilia
  • Sexual attraction to children and prefer to
engage in sex with children rather than adults.
  • Generally requires child to be under the age of
13, and initiated by someone at least 16 years of
age or at least 5 years older than the child.
  • Individual may be threatening to the child or can
appear to be gentle, caring, and loving to the
    child.

7
Pedophilia
  • Mostly occurs between heterosexual men and young
    girls.
  • Sexual attraction to children may be operantly
    reinforced throughout childhood.
  • Attempts to inhibit the desires may have a
    paradoxical effect.
  • Other healthy sexual activity is not gratifying
    and therefore, not reinforced.
  • Modeling
  • Cognitive distortions (victim is to blame,
perceiving desire that is not there, victim
deserving of punishment, justifying the cause,
    minimizing consequences, etc.)

8
Treatment
  • Most do not seek treatment.
  • Treatment more likely to come as a result of
    being court-ordered.
  • Biological treatments
  • Chemical castration or antiandrogen drugs that
    suppress production of testosterone
  • Aversion therapy
  • Treatment can be successful, especially for
voyeurs, exhibitionists, and child molesters (no
intercourse). Worse outcomes for pedophilia and
    rape.
