  • The Basics of Giving a Speech
  • Giving a speech is all about delivery

Statistics
  • Sight accounts for more than 80 of what we
    learn
  • Combining visuals with voice increases
    retention by 50
  • (It reduces the time required to present
    information by up to 40)

3
The components of an effective speech
  • Know your objective
  • Structure the message for the ear
  • You have to build up a major point and prepare
the audience for what is coming.
  • As your speech progresses, you must restate basic
points and also summarize your general message.
Tell them what you are going to tell them, tell
it to them, and then tell them what you have told
    them.
  • The words you use should be clear, concise, short
    and definite.

4
  • Tailor remarks to the audience by doing some
    audience analysis and basic research.
  • Give specifics.
  • Keep it short.
  • Keep eye contact and use appropriate gestures.

5
Visual Aids for Presentations
  • PowerPoint
  • Presentation slides should support the speaker
with a few key words or easily understood
    graphics. (Peter Nolan, PR Tactics)
  • People spend too much time messing with the
PowerPoint and not enough time messing with the
    message. (Manly, USA Today)

6
  • Dont make your slide too detailed or cluttered
with too much clip art or the use of fancy
    borders.
  • Dont include too much copy.
  • Use 4 4 rule
  • A minimum of 24to 28 point type for all words.
  • Keep it simple
  • Dont use multiple colors for the background and
    the text.

7
  • Slides provide the headline. You provide the
    details.
  • Breakdowns are a given always bring a hard
copy and transparencies (Robert Baskin, PRWeek)
