Title: 350 Club Pilot Projects

1
350 Club Pilot Projects
  • BACKGROUND
  • 350 refers to the minimum score that defines
grade level proficiency on the California
    Standards Test
  • No Child Left Behind requires schools to have a
    specific percentage of students demonstrating
    proficiency each year
  • Achievement goals are gradually ratcheted up and
schools that dont meet those goals face
    sanctions that interfere with local
    decision-making

2
350 Club Pilot Projects
  • PURPOSE
  • To provide additional supports to students whose
previous years scores were close to but still
below the 350 mark so that they could advance
into the Proficient category in the following
    year
  • To demonstrate the capacity of Family Resource
Centers to collaborate with schools in order to
reach specific achievement goals in a relatively
short period of time (one year)

  • INTERVENTION
    DESIGN PART I
  • Pilot project sites Loma Verde, Montgomery,
Otay, Rice and Vista Square Elementary Schools
  • Target audience students with previous year CST
scores of less than 350 in either Language Arts
or Math (some schools narrowed target audience by
focusing on ELL students, certain grade levels,
or using the intervention to complement an
    existing program)
  • Timing interventions were carried out in Spring
2006, in the three months immediately preceding
administration of the CST to students

  • INTERVENTION
    DESIGN PART II
  • Components
  • Kick-off event to which parents of targeted
students were invited and extra supports for
    maximizing student achievement were offered
    through the school and FRC
  • Series of four workshops for parents on How to
Help Your Child Succeed in School, was provided
in English or Spanish, as appropriate
  • Extra tutoring time and learning tools for
    students were provided
  • Note that program design varied from site to site
in two ways target audience and intervention
    strategies

5
350 Club Pilot Projects

  • OBSERVED OUTCOMES PART I
  • Engagement of target audience in intervention
    activities

Students already involved in after school
tutoring were the target population
6
350 Club Pilot Projects

  • OBSERVED OUTCOMES PART II
  • Improvement of CST scores for the most
    meaningfully engaged participants

  • RECOMMENDATIONS
  • Schools and FRCs should continue to partner to
address the challenges presented by No Child Left
    Behind
  • FRCs should engage parents in order to help them
become involved in boosting academic achievement
and identify needs for family support services
  • Schools should provide increased learning time
and additional high impact learning tools, such
    as Successmaker software
