Story
  • The most difficult part of the project
  • Main goal is to entertain and humor audience
  • The storyline allowed us to add, remove, change,
    and assign scenes easily
  • Small number characters and props

3
Visual Style
  • Cartoon style derived from story concept
  • Cartoon style made modeling, animating, and
    rendering simpler
  • Simple textures and color scheme helped minimize
    the need for realism
  • Chess models modeled from pictures of real chess
    pieces

4
Storyboards
  • A project template for modeling, scene setup, and
    animation

5
Modeling
  • Chess models mainly consist of revolved surfaces
    and polygonal shapes
  • Models were built simple to keep visual style and
    minimize rendering time
  • Standardized base used in construction of chess
    piece models

8
Standardization
  • All models were built separately, so scaling
    became an issue
  • Skeleton structures
  • Rotational, movement, and scaling centers were
    set uniformly
  • Standardized set of materials

9
Layout
  • For scene consistency, there were two main
    layouts of the chessboard
  • The layouts were the starting points for each
scene animation so that pieces in the background
    would maintain positions

Cameras Lighting
  • For each layout, cameras for each scene were
placed as suggested views for animations
  • There are five lights that provide illumination

13
Organization
  • Two tools for communication
  • Email mailing list
  • Group spreadsheet

14
Animation
  • Tell the story visually
  • Life-like motion is difficult, needed to be
    smooth and used Disneys techniques
  • Collision detection
  • Pacing, speed, timing, and duration

15
Animation
16
Post Production
  • Rendered frames sequenced in Adobe Premier
  • Music, sound effects, titles and credits added
  • Special effects added
  • Editing and revision

17
Thoughts
  • More work in pre-production
  • An exploration on possible technologies
  • Better group collaboration and integration
