Prairie Plant Directory Southwest Minnesota State

Introduction Pond, marsh, prairie, woods,
wildlife are all at the northwest corner of
campus. This 22-acre site also features old field
habitat, a coniferous and deciduous forest. Hike
the groomed trails that wind through the Wildlife
Area, or strap on cross-country skis for a brisk
winter work-out. Through all four seasons,
university groups, school groups, and outdoor
organizations are invited to increase their
understanding and appreciation of nature at the
Wildlife Area. Located in the southwest corner of
the SMSU wildlife area is a 4-acre restored
prairie. The prairie restoration project was
started during the summer of 1998 with help from
a DNR Conservation Partner's Grant to Dr E A Desy
(Biology Program) for the purchase of prairie
seeds. Every year a new species is "discovered"
and added to the inventory list as the prairie
continues to develop from the seeds sown in 1998.
