Causes of a Hurricane

• Hurricanes are formed from thunderstorms that
  grow into large storms.
• The ocean water must be warmer than 26.5 degrees
  Celsius (81 degrees Fahrenheit). The heat and
  moisture from this warm water is ultimately the
  source of energy for hurricanes.
• High humidity is also required for hurricane
  development. High humidity reduces the amount of
  evaporation in clouds and maximizes the heat
  released due to more precipitation.
• High winds moving in the correct direction are
  also required for hurricane formation.

The path of a hurricane greatly depends on the
location of the wind belt. For example, a
hurricane originating in the eastern tropical
Atlantic (off the coast of Africa) is driven
westward by easterly trade winds in the tropics.
Eventually, these storms turn northwestward and
migrate into higher latitudes. As a result, the
Gulf of Mexico and East Coast of the United
States are at risk to experience one or more
hurricanes each year.

(NWS) issues a five day tracking forecast to warn
residents of an approaching hurricane. They use
the following information sources to make their
forecasts

• Reconnaissance flights through the eye of the
  storm to get more precise information about the
  storms path and intensity.
• From the aircraft, microwave sensors that measure
  the precipitation in the storm and the winds at
  the oceans surface.
• Ocean temperatures that can help to predict when
  conditions are favorable for hurricanes to form.
