  starting to do functions that you would normally
  have to have a computer to do

The Sony Walkman

• Allowed people to carry their music with them
• Created by Nobutoshi Kihara
• Released on March 24, 1979
• The invention was born from a tweaked Pressman
  (Sony's portable cassette recorder) and a pair of
  headphones.

The Portable CD Player

• The Sony D-50 (Discman) was Sonys first portable
  CD player
• It was first put on the market in the beginning
  of 1984.
• Size of a CD case
• Sparked public interest in CDs

The Age of Digital Music

• Two main types of DAPs (Digital Audio Players)
• First mass-produced DAP was created in 1997 by
  SaeHan Information Systems

The Diamond Multimedia Rio PMP300 is often
mistaken as being the first DAP because it was
the target of a major lawsuit by the RIAA against
the MP3 player claimed it was promoting illegal
copying of music

The iPod

• Idea behind the iPod started with Tony Fadell.
  Fadell wanted to deliver a small hard drive-based
  player that was linked with a content delivery
  system where users could legally obtain and
  download music. Both Real Networks and Phillips
  declined his proposal.
• He approached Apple, and they were eager to
  produce the product. In the span of eight months,
  Fadell's team and PortalPlayer (a company that
  Apple partnered with to produce the iPod)
  dedicated all of their energies to finishing the
  iPod.

• PMPs (Portable Media)
• Handheld internet devices

The next few years

• As computer chips have gotten smaller and more
  power efficient, the devices have become more
  powerful.
• Because of this, the focus of many of the new and
  upcoming devices is on SOFTWARE rather than
  HARDWARE.
• Many of the new devices coming out have
  touch-screens that allow the user to easily
  navigate the GUI of the device.
