  • As a volunteer tutor, you require various
    teaching competencies. You will develop these
    skills over time and with experience. Lesson
    planning is an important part of being an
    educator and volunteer tutor.  Lesson plans help
    students to reach their goals.

The Steps
  • How do I develop a lesson plan?
  • Lesson plans can be developed using the following
    steps
  • Step One  Brainstorm some learning goals by
    sketching a mind map (or spider web).
  • Step Two Create a SMART objective from the mind
    map to  determine if the learning goal is
  • SpecificMeasurableAttainableRelevantTime
    bound
  • Step Three Draft a Lesson Plan using your SMART
    objective.

Step One - Create a Mind Map
The following example involves developing an
introductory computer lesson plan. With a mind
map (or spider web) identify the goal and then
identify the objectives.

Step Two - Create a Smart Objective
  • Create a SMART Objective from the mind map...
  • Specific Goal Introduction to Windows 95 and
    mouse skills
  • Measurable Student will recognize the common
    elements of a Windows 95 screen and competently
    use a mouse
  • Attainable Vocabulary, visuals and hands-on
  • Relevant Computer skills can be used in literacy
    lessons and on the job
  • Time Bound Two half-hour sessions for these two
    specific skills

  • Step Three Draft a lesson plan for your student
    using the SMART objective identified in step two.

  • Learning Goals Student will recognize the common

  • Methodology
  • Demonstrate how to turn on the computer properly.
  • Share the handout of the Windows 95 desktop
  • Label the desktop with using proper terminology
    Icon, Taskbar, Start menu etc.
  • Locate the same elements on the actual computer
    screen.
  • Provide the student with another handout (Windows
    95 desktop) and have the student copy the words
    onto the new sheet.
  • Use this vocabulary as part of the literacy
    lesson.
  • Demonstrate the different mouse clicks Click,
    Double click, Click and drag
  • Demonstrate how to open an application Open
    Solitaire
  • Show the student the rules of the solitaire game
  • Demonstrate when to click, double-click and click
    and drag
  • Allow the student ample time to get comfortable
    with the mouse while playing solitaire. (15
    minutes)
  • Review Desktop terminology, Mouse clicks, Assign
    homework (learn terminology presented in this
