Simple Sentences
  • A simple sentence consists of a single
    independent clause. That means it has one
    subject/verb pair and is a complete thought.
  • Ex. Carl liked Betty a lot.

Examples
  • One subject and verb The valentine came.
  • Compound subject Flowers and chocolate are
    common (on Valentines day).
  • Compound verb The envelope ripped and opened.
  • Compound subject and verb My mother and father
    said goodbye and left (on vacation).
  • Compound direct object I opened the card and my
    box.
  • Compound prepositional phrase Flowers fell (to
    the right) and (to the left).

Compound Sentences
  • A compound sentence consists of two or more
    independent clauses. In most compound sentences,
    the independent clauses are joined by a comma and
    a coordinating conjunction ( FANBOYS). Compound
    sentences can also be joined by a semicolon.
  • Ex. Mary liked Tommy, but Tommy liked Suzie.
  • Mary liked Tommy however, Tommy liked Suzie.

  • Rhonda wanted milk chocolate, but she got dark
    chocolate instead.
  • Carla just got dumped (by her boyfriend), so she
    sat (at home) eating chocolate (on Valentines
    Day).
  • Valentines Day (at school) was fun, for we had a
    classroom party.
  • Sue got roses (from her husband) she was
    allergic (to them).

Complex Sentences
  • A complex sentence consists of one independent
    clause and one or more subordinate (dependent)
    clauses.
  • Ex. Cupid, who shoots people (with arrows), is
    the main attraction (on Valentines Day).
