4The Art Meyer Era
- Born in Castalia, Iowa on March 3rd, 1929 to
Maybel and Harold Meyer - Attended Postville High School
- Bachelor of Arts in Music Education. Emphasis on
Instrumental Music_at_ Wartburg College- Waverly,
Iowa - Masters Degree _at_ Northern Colorado St. Univ.-
Greely, CO - Director of Bands at AHS from 1955-81
- Married to his wife Jo Ann and resides in
Atlantic.
5Mr. Eric JohnsonDirector of Bands, AHS 1988-1990
- Grew up in Chadron Nebraska and attended Chadron
High School where he was involved in band and
chorus. - Went to Chadron St. University and later attended
Minnesota St. University _at_ Mankato. - Taught for 20 years at various schools in
Nebraska. He was later a professional French Horn
player. - After playing the French Horn professionally, he
moved to Atlantic and was the Director of Bands
at AHS. - He is happily married to his wife, Beverly, of
whom is the Activities Director at the Heritage
House in Atlantic.
6The Bret Lee Era
- Was born and raised in Carlisle, Iowa where he
attended Carlisle HS. - Involved in Band and Chorus in HS and college.
- Attended University of Northern Iowa _at_ Cedar
Falls. - Taught _at_ Green Mountain-Garwin CSD and _at_ Wapsie
Valley CSD in Fairbank. - Taught in Atlantic from 1990-1999.
- He now teaches in Marshalltown.
- Said that, It was a great experience and a
wonderful community. about Atlantic
7The ????Deron Jimmerson Era???
- Mr. Jimmerson is originally from MN
- Graduated with Bachelor of Music Degree from
Simpson College _at_ Indianola. - Was Jazz director for a touring group,
Celebration Iowa, in 2001. - Taught at AHS from 1999 to 2002.
- He now teaches at Waseca High school in Waseca,
MN. His duties include the Waseca Marching Band,
Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz I, Jazz II and
the Waseca High School Pep Band

- Grew up in Emerson, IA.
- Attended Emerson High School. Graduated in 1964.
- Graduated from NW Missouri State University in
Maryville in 1968. - Taught at S. Page HS and Red Oak MS before
teaching in Atlantic from 1975-2001.

- Rockin the Paradise- Styx (trumpet solo- Burke
Shouse, Senior) - Too Much Time on My Hands- Styx (bass drum
feature) - Babe/Mr. Roboto-Styx (flugel horn solo-Abby
Sothman, Junior) - AWARDS First Place- Field Competition at SW Iowa
Band Jamboree, Second Place- Parade Competition
at SW Iowa Band Jamboree, and a Division I rating
at the State Marching Band contest _at_ Lewis
Central - Played at the September 11th. Rememberance

10The Mr. Ruben Newell EraDirector of Bands,
Atlantic High School
- Born in Moorland, Iowa March 22nd., 1978.
- Graduated from Prairie Valley HS in Gowrie, Iowa-
1996. - Graduated from ISU-2000.
- Had many college jobs, including being an
assistant director of bands at West Des Moines
Valley HS. He was among five other directors.
They have a marching band of 250 people!!! - Director of Bands, Corning Jr/Sr. HS 2000-2002
- Primary Instrument Alto Saxophone.
11Happy 75th. Birthday to the Atlantic High School
Trojan Guard!!!
- The Trojan Guard has been alive and well since
the 1927-28 school year. - This was before the Old High School was built on
Linn Street! - We are alive and well with eighty-three members.
(2002) - The first band director, in 1928, was Lowell
Lockenridge. He taught Band, Orchestra and
Physics
12AHS Pep Band 2002
- The pep band had originally scheduled eleven
performances. We had fifteen performances total
We performed a random selection of songs out of a
folder of forty-four songs that included a
variety of mostly oldies songs - We performed in four different cities and venues
this year The Trojan Bowl- Atlantic, Veterans
Memorial Auditorium- Des Moines, The UNI-Dome-
Cedar Falls, and Pella Dutch Field- Pella. - The major success is in part thanks to the
success of our championship undefeated football
team and our girls basketball team.

13AHS Symphonic Band
- Is in session from November to May. The 2nd, 3rd,
and 4th. Quarters. - Got tenth straight Division I rating at the State
Large Group contest in Harlan. - Played Variations on a Korean Folksong,
Americans We, and Sheppards Hey
14The AHS Jazz Band
- Had 20-25 members in the 2002-2003 season
- Played Puffy Taco, I Remember Clifford,
Blues in Hoss Flat, Norwegian Wood, and Get
It On

- Georgia on My Mind/ Birdland, trumpet solo
- St. Thomas percussion feature
- Harlem Nocturne, tenor saxophone solo

17The definition of a true band geek
- Band geek- v/ 1a. Can be defined as someone who
lives and breathes AHS band. 1b. A band geek
could also be somebody that walks out of English
class humming another schools fight song. 1c.
Also, a band geek can be most clearly
distinguished as somebody who walks down the
hallways of AHS marking time as they walk. 2a.
Somebody who is in AHS band and cries every time
he/she hears Illinois Loyalty, the schools
fight song.
