Geologic History

COOL FACTS TO KNOW
  • Maximum depth 594 Meters
  • Average depth 350 Meters
  • The lake is know to be the deepest in the U.S.
and the seventh deepest in the world
  • Gets an average of 533 inches of snow per year.
    (1356cm)
  • Evaporation and seepage prevent the lake from
    becoming any deeper.

MORE FACTS TO LEARN
  • The Mount Mazama, part of the Cascade Range
volcanic arc, was built up mostly of andesite,
dacite, and rhyodacite over a period of at least
    400,000 years.
  • Lava eruptions later created a central platform.
  • In time, the caldera cooled it allowed rain and
snow to accumulate and eventually form a lake.
  • Landslides from the caldera rim thereafter formed
debris fans and turbidite sediments on the
    lakebed.
