Introduction. (1) In health education, students
acquire the health information and skills
necessary to become healthy adults and learn
about behaviors in which they should and should
not participate. To achieve that goal, students
will understand the following students should
first seek guidance in the area of health from
their parents personal behaviors can increase or
reduce health risks throughout the lifespan
health is influenced by a variety of factors
students can recognize and utilize health
information and products and personal/interperson
al skills are needed to promote individual,
family, and community health. (2) In Grade 1,
students learn more about their bodies and how to
care for themselves. Students also begin to learn

health, and that there are community helpers such
as nurses and doctors who help them stay healthy.
In Grade 1, students also learn skills to help
them make friends, resolve conflicts, and solve
problems.

understand the importance of nutrition and
healthy eating. In "Nutrient Sleuth" students
must follow clues to find the missing nutrient.
"Grab a Grape" requires visitors to match
nutrition-related questions and answers in a
Jeopardy-like format. The eye-opening "Have a
Bite" activity asks students to build a meal from
a menu of choices and find out how nutritious it

the food pyramid, and explores serving sizes,

folks to eat vegetables in appropriate
quantities. While the subject may not be popular
with young people, health and nutrition teachers

to help students make more intelligent choices

Parents/index.htm - This US Department of Agriculture site provides
valuable information for parents interested in
teaching their children healthy eating habits.
The site has a seasonal guide for healthy eating,
ten tips for planning healthy school lunches,
activities that parents and children can do
together, and a list of health conscious reading
resources sorted by age-group.

venerable site as an encouragement to make fruits
and vegetables a central part of the American
diet. Though not designed specifically for
students, the site includes complete resources -
recipes, promotional ideas, local contact
information, etc. - and could be useful for
health and nutrition classes. - BILINGUAL HEALTH INFORMATION- http//www.ncfh.org/
pateduc.htm - The information on this site was originally
developed for limited literacy Spanish and
English speaking patients. It offers basic
health, nutrition, and lifestyles information in
a context which may be suitable for either
students or parents in certain specific settings.
Lots of illustrations and minimal use of text
help make these resources easy to use.
