TB Burden
  • The annual risk of infection is estimated 2-3
    of the population
  • TB accounts for 3.87 cases for all
    hospitalizations
  • It is the third leading cause of death (8.35)
  • The main reasons for increase in TB are emergence
    of AIDS and treatment failure

TB Treatment
  • Up to 1991 TB was treated in TB centers and
    sanatorium
  • Since 1992 TB program has been integrated and is
    being treated in all health centers and
    hospitals
  • Conventional TB treatment has not been regulated
    and variation were common in TB treatment
  • In 1998 MOH started DOTS as a Pilot in one zone

Future outlook
  • Current war with Ethiopia - displaced 200,000
    people which obviously will be favorable for the
    spread of TB
  • Sustainability of the program--TB is being
    treated fee of charge--but resources??
  • Poverty--poor living conditions will adversely
    affect the TB situation in Eritrea

  • Current AIDS epidemic will increase the incidence
    of TB ( out of 100 TB patients 40 are HIV
    positive)
  • MDR TB is a threat due to poor compliance and
    irregular drug supplies
  • Only one hospital can do TB culture
  • Help is needed NOW!
