2 The Estonian National Inventory
- until 1993 accession s in VIR and breeders
working collections
- 1994 - activities on preservation of plant
genetic resources in Estonia were initiated in
co-operation with the Nordic Gene Bank
- 1997 The National Council on PGRFA was
established
- 1999 - The gene bank of the Jõgeva PBI was set up
(financial support was provided by the Nordic
Council of Ministers)
- A national PGR programme was formally approved
and finances allocated by the Government on
14.08.2002
- 2003 preparation of law on PGR
- The Estonian NI is maintained by the genebank of
the Jõgeva Plant Breeding Institute
- The number of PGR accessions that would be
considered part of the national inventory is
approximately 2000
- approximately 70 species are represented

4The genebank of the Jõgeva Plant Breeding
Institute
- Status of the national genebank on ex situ
preservation has been given to the genebank by
the Minister of Agriculture in 2002
- Long-term ex-situ preservation of cereals,
grasses, legumes and vegetables
- 670 ex situ accessions of 37 species 96
varieties of an Estonian origin
- 160 accessions of potato in field collection
- 3500 accessions in breeders field collections

the Estonian Agricultural University
- In vitro preservation of agricultural and
horticultural crops
- 1300 accessions of 34 species
- 800 meristemclones of 420 potato varieties,
breeding material and landraces

Agricultural University
- Breeding and research centre of fruit crops
- Preservation of fruit trees and berry plants
- 900 accessions of 14 species
- 93 varieties of an Estonian origin

- Major challenges and constraints
- Collaboration between all maintainers of
germplasm
- All relevant information on ex situ collections
has to be documented in the central NI database
- The solutions for solving the constraints are in
the effective collaboration between all partners
on the national and international level-
8The Estonian National Inventory
- Development of the national inventory
- The national inventory has to be continued for
elaboration of existing private collections
- Survey of private collections shall assure
preservation of an unique Estonian germplasm,
which is under the threat of loss presently
- There is an intention to collect all relevant
information on all collections of Estonia into
one central database to increase the value and
efficiency of the collections
