Lord, Teach Us To Pray
  • Proseuchomai, term most used pray, ask (Rom.
    826 1 Cor. 1413 Phil. 19).
  • Deesis, entreaty, supplication (Lk. 113 237
    533 Rom. 101, 2 2 Cor. 111).
  • Aiteo, to ask (Matt. 77-10 Eph. 320 Col. 19
    James (4 times) 1 Jn. (5 times).
  • Matt. 69-13, for kingdom, Gods will be done,
    daily bread, pardon, guidance, deliverance.
  • Health (3 Jn. 2), safety in travel (Matt. 2420),
    tranquil mind (Phil. 47), mercy (Heb. 416),
    wisdom (James 15), boldness (Eph. 619).

Basically, to pray to petition
  • To ask for something.
  • Neh. 111, O Lord, I pray please let your ear be
    atttentive Restore Jerusalem.
  • Matt. 2420, pray that youir flight not be in
    the winter.
  • Matt. 2641, pray that you not enter into
    temptation.
  • Rom. 101, my prayer to God for Israel is that
    they might be saved.

Saints have influence with God
  • 1 Pet. 311, The eyes of the LORD are on the
    righteous, And His ears are open to their
    prayers.
  • James 516, The effective, fervent prayer of a
    righteous man avails much. 17 Elijah was a man
    with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly
    that it would not rain and it did not rain on
    the land for three years and six months. 18 And
    he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and
    the earth produced its fruit. Miracle? Go back
    and read it!

We are to pray for all men
  • 1 Tim. 21, I exhort first of all that
    supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving
    of thanks be made for all men.
  • For governments (ours, others), for relatives,
    neighbors, friends.
  • And enemies, Matt. 544, and pray for those who
    spitefully use you and persecute you.
  • Rom. 101, Brethren, my heart's desire and
    prayer to God for Israel is that they may be
    saved.

The Example of Jesus
  • Matt. 1423, He went upon a mountain by Himself
    to pray Lk 612, all night.
  • Luke 321, Jesus also was baptized, and while He
    prayed, the heaven was opened
  • Luke 928, As He prayed, the appear-ance of His
    face was altered, and His robe became white and
    glistening.

How To Pray
  • Pray to Father (Mt. 69 Lk. 112), in the name
    of Christ, our only Mediator (Jn. 1413 1 Tim.
    25 1 Jn. 21 Heb. 415)
  • Praise God. Hallowed by Thy name. Study Psalms
    and Revelation (ch. 4, 5).
  • Thy will be done- submit to His will!
  • Make petitions and then, of course, fully
    cooperate with our prayers. Bread? Lead us not?
    Lost? Sick, needy or weak brethren? Preachers?
    Just pray?
  • Watch and pray work and pray!

With much thanksgiving
  • Matt. 1419, when Jesus fed multitudes
  • Matt. 2626, 27, gave thanks for bread, fruit of
    vine. Bless give thanks.
  • John 1141, Father, I thank You that You have
    heard Me.
  • Pauls letters are full of thanksgiving and
    instruction regarding thanksgiving.
  • Rom. 18, I thank God .. that your faith is
    spoken of throughout the world.
  • Eph. 619, praying always with all prayer and
    supplication in the Spirit.

Requirements for Prayer
  • Only children of God can say our Father
  • 1 Tim. 28, men pray, lifting up holy hands,
    without wrath and doubting.
  • 1 Pet. 312, For the eyes of the LORD are on the
    righteous, And His ears are open to their
    prayers.
  • James 516, confess your sins to one another,
    and pray for one another.
  • 1 Jn. 322, whatever we ask we receive from Him,
    because we keep His commandments and do those
    things that are pleasing in His sight.

Requirements for prayer
  • James 16, But let him ask in faith, with no
    doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the
    sea driven and tossed by the wind.
  • Rom. 101, my hearts desire-sincerity
  • Luke 115-8, friend at midnight 181-5, unjust
    judge Matt. 1518, Canaanite woman
    Persistence in prayer!
  • 1 Jn. 514, Now this is the confidence that we
    have in Him, that if we ask anything according to
    His will, He hears us.

God may say no
  • 2 Cor. 127, Concerning this thing I pleaded
    with the Lord three times that it might depart
    from me. 8, And He said to me, My grace is
    sufficient for you, for My strength is made
    perfect in weakness.
  • But He gave Paul something better than what he
    asked for.
  • Or we may be praying selfishly. James 43, You
    ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss,
    that you may spend it on your pleasures.

God is not limited to miracles
  • Matt. 69-13, ask for miracles? Or James 15,
    wisdom? 1 Tim. 21, 2, rulers?
  • Miracles not done to accommodate man.
  • There were sick brethren in 1st Century.
  • Signs to confirm the word, Heb. 23.
  • God works through His word (teachings).
  • And He works through natural law without
    performing miracles. All the forces of nature
    are the forces of God!
  • This is my Fathers world and its not on
    automatic pilot!

Standing on the promises
  • Rom. 832, He who did not spare His own Son, but
    delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not
    with Him also freely give us all things?
  • James 516, The effective, fervent prayer of a
    righteous man avails much.
  • When they prayed Jesus heaven opened Peter
    sheet let down from heaven Cornelius prayer
    heard, send for preacher church place shaken
    Paul and Silas earthquake.
  • Prayer makes a difference,changes things

Conclusion
  • How often? 1 Thess. 517, without ceasing Eph.
    618, at all times.
  • Hindrances fail to ask, pray as mere formality
    (supposed to), disobedient, negligent, marital
    problems (1 Pet. 37), unforgiving, doubt,
    substitute for work, stop ears to cry of poor,
    Prov.2113.
  • Never teach child memorized prayer.
  • Prayer not Aladdins lamp nor fire escape nor
    ultimatum (if you dont).
  • Luke 181, always pray, not lose heart
