What is an amphibian?

Amphibian \Amphib"ian\

• A cold-blooded, smooth-skinned vertebrate of the
  class Amphibia, such as a frog or salamander,
  that characteristically hatches as an aquatic
  larva with gills. The larva then transforms into
  an adult having air-breathing lungs.

Characteristics

• Includes frogs, salamanders, and caecilians
• Amphibian means double-life, as many spend part
  of their life in water and part of it on land
• Moist, hairless skin through which water can pass
  in and out
• Frogs have strong legs and no tail for jumping
  salamanders have four short legs and a long tail
  for balance on land caecilians have no limbs
• Amphibians are ectotherms they cannot generate
  their own body heat
• Adult amphibians generally have lungs, rather
  than gills, but some water-dwelling species have
  both.
