• Born on May 29, 1917 in Brookline
• He was named in honor of his mothers father,
  John Francis Fitzgerald
• Second of nine children, he was raised in a
  family with intense intellectual competition

• Attended Edward Devotion School for four years
• 1935-Graduated from Choate Rosemary Hall in
  Connecticut
• Enrolled in London School of Economics
• Fall 1935- Attended Princeton University
• 1940- Graduated from Harvard

Military Service

• 1941- Volunteered for the U.S. Army, but was not
  accepted because of troubles with his back
• 1941- He was accepted by the Navy
• 1941-It was during his assignment that the attack
  on Pearl Harbor occurred
• 1943- His boat was rammed by a Japanese torpedo

• 1945-He was discharged only a few months before
