66
  • Welcome to the United States!
  • Many times people visit a foreign country with
    already established perceptions and expectations.
  • Many times things are not what people hoped or
    thought they would be.
  • This is normal and is often referred to as
    culture shock

67
  • Culture shock is the emotional and behavioral
reaction to living in a culture in which our
ideas of normal or natural do not apply.
  • What we consider normal or natural is based
on what our culture teaches us.

68
  • There are typically three stages of intercultural
    adjustment
  • Honeymoon or initial euphoria stage
  • Irritability or rejection stage
  • Gradual adjustment and cultural adaptation stage

69
Phase One The Honeymoon
I love America and Americans!
70
(No Transcript)
71
Phase Two Irritability
I hate America and Americans!
72
(No Transcript)
73
Americans are . . .
superficial
obnoxious
rude
fake
insincere
boastful
loud
hypocritical
distant
74
  • Symptoms of culture shock
  • Assuming something is wrong with members of the
    host culture
  • Over-valuing the home culture and devaluing the
    host culture
  • Feeling homesick, tired, lonely, frustrated, sad,
    anxious

75
  • Managing culture shock
  • Give yourself a break!
  • Dont be afraid to ask questions, test new
    behaviors, and laugh at yourself
  • Spend time with members of the host culture

76
  • Managing culture shock, continued
  • Keep a journal and reflect on your daily
    experiences to understand them better
  • Dont confuse your ability to speak a new
    language with your intelligence
  • Stay active

77
  • Managing culture shock, continued
  • Remind yourself of and enjoy cues related to your
home culture every now and then
  • Be realistic you most likely will experience
culture shock but recognize it for what it is

78
Phase Three Adaptation
I get America and Americans!
79
Do you understand the American language?
How are you?
(Hello)
Fine
Whats up?
(Hello)
Not much
80
Do you understand the American language?
Lets have lunch
(Good-bye)
Sounds good
Ill call you
(Good-bye)
Okay
81
Do you understand the American language?
Let me think about it
(No)
Thats interesting
(I have nothing good to say about it)
82
Do you understand the American language?
Consider doing X
(Do X)
Thats nice
(Im not interested or I dont care or I
dont know what else to say)
83
Americans tend to be individualistic,
independent, direct, informal, action-oriented,
assertive, believe everyone is equal, believe
