  • This flag was adopted on August 4, 1766 under the
    idea that French colonies such as Martinique and
    St. Lucia should fly their own flags on their
    vessels.

  • The island was first spotted by Columbus in 1493
    but did not visit it until 1502
  • French settlers came to the island in 1635 and
    claimed it for France
  • In 1636 slaves began to be shipped to Martinique
    to work on tobacco fields but the main crop
    quickly became sugar cane
  • Martinique was annexed by France in 1674
  • In 1775 France decided to govern Guadeloupe and
    Martinique separately
  • There were brief periods in the 18th and 19th
    century that Martinique fell under British rule

  • French abolitionist Victor Schoelcher contributed
    to the end of slavery in the French colonies in
    1848.
  • Martinique became a Department of France in 1946.
    The further status of Region was granted in 1974.
