Title: Gospel Boldness, Pure Motives and Godly Living

1
Gospel Boldness, Pure Motives and Godly Living
  • 1Thessalonians 21-12

Presented by Bob DeWaay November 27, 2005
2
Gospel Boldness
  • 1Thessalonians 21, 2
  • For you yourselves know, brethren, that our
coming to you was not in vain, but after we had
already suffered and been mistreated in Philippi,
as you know, we had the boldness in our God to
speak to you the gospel of God amid much
    opposition.

3
Pleasing God Not Men
  • 1Thessalonians 23, 4
  • For our exhortation does not come from error or
impurity or by way of deceit but just as we have
been approved by God to be entrusted with the
gospel, so we speak, not as pleasing men but God,
    who examines our hearts.

4
Paul Did Not Tailor His Message to Fit Popular
Opinion
  • 1Thessalonians 25
  • For we never came with flattering speech, as you
know, nor with a pretext for greed-- God is
    witness--

5
Paul Did Not Seek Fame or Fortune
  • 1Thessalonians 26
  • nor did we seek glory from men, either from you
or from others, even though as apostles of Christ
we might have asserted our authority.

6
The Well Being of the Flock Came First
  • 1Thessalonians 27
  • But we proved to be gentle among you, as a
nursing mother tenderly cares for her own
    children.

7
Not Detached Professionalism But Personal
Involvement
  • 1Thessalonians 28
  • Having thus a fond affection for you, we were
well-pleased to impart to you not only the gospel
of God but also our own lives, because you had
    become very dear to us.

8
Paul Showed His Good Motives by His Work
  • 1Thessalonians 29
  • For you recall, brethren, our labor and
hardship, how working night and day so as not to
be a burden to any of you, we proclaimed to you
    the gospel of God.

9
No Wrong Doing Could be Charged to Paul
  • 1Thessalonians 210, 11
  • You are witnesses, and so is God, how devoutly
and uprightly and blamelessly we behaved toward
you believers just as you know how we were
exhorting and encouraging and imploring each one
of you as a father would his own children,

10
Living Consistently with Ones Hope of the Coming
Kingdom
  • 1Thessalonians 212
  • so that you may walk in a manner worthy of the
God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.

11

Applications
  • We should have boldness in the Gospel.
  • We should minister with godly motives.
  • We should live out the practical implications of
    the gospel consistently.

12

We Should Have Boldness in the Gospel
  • Ephesians 619, 20
  • and pray on my behalf, that utterance may be
given to me in the opening of my mouth, to make
known with boldness the mystery of the gospel,
for which I am an ambassador in chains that in
proclaiming it I may speak boldly, as I ought to
    speak.

13

We Should Pray for Boldness in the Gospel
  • Acts 413 (ESV)
  • Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and
John, and perceived that they were uneducated,
common men, they were astonished. And they
recognized that they had been with Jesus.

14

We Should Pray for Boldness in the Gospel
  • Acts 429
  • And now, Lord, take note of their threats, and
grant that Thy bond-servants may speak Thy word
    with all confidence,

15

Answered Prayer
  • Acts 431
  • And when they had prayed, the place where they
had gathered together was shaken, and they were
all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to
speak the word of God with boldness.

16

Gospel Boldness
  • Acts 2830, 31 (ESV)
  • He lived there two whole years at his own
expense, and welcomed all who came to him,
proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about
the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and
    without hindrance.

17

We Should Minister with godly Motives
  • 2Corinthians 42
  • but we have renounced the things hidden because
of shame, not walking in craftiness or
adulterating the word of God, but by the
manifestation of truth commending ourselves to
every man's conscience in the sight of God.

18

We Should Minister with godly Motives
  • 2Corinthians 217
  • For we are not like many, peddling the word of
God, but as from sincerity, but as from God, we
speak in Christ in the sight of God.

19

We Should live out the Practical Implications of
the Gospel Consistently
  • Ephesians 55
  • For this you know with certainty, that no
immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is
an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of
    Christ and God.

20

We Should live out the Practical Implications of
the Gospel Consistently
  • Ephesians 56, 7
  • Let no one deceive you with empty words, for
because of these things the wrath of God comes
upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not
    be partakers with them

21

We Should live out the Practical Implications of
the Gospel Consistently
  • Ephesians 58
  • for you were formerly darkness, but now you are
light in the Lord walk as children of light

22

We Should Care for the Lords Flock
  • Galatians 513
  • For you were called to freedom, brethren only
do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for
the flesh, but through love serve one another.
