Green Bricks drying in the mud
Burning the Kiln
Finished with laterite earth, lime and cement
5
Effective Cost Cycle
Approximate Cost of the House Rs. 978
1086/- 19-22 per sq. m.
Cost of RD Rs. 3,000 60
Hence, Total Cost of the House Rs. 65,000/- 1,300
Return of Product Sales (Sales of Bricks) Rs.
45,000/- 900
The Actual Price Rs. 369/- 8 per sq. m.

A problem of Scale / Factors in Cost
  • Large Scale Production System for more efficiency
  • Government help subsidized loans
  • Mud buildings are vulnerable to unseasonable
rains when a large quantity of mud products has
    to be protected
  • Invalidation of Process
  • Foundation cost is high and the vaults fairly
    high
  • Most of the work is unskilled i.e. moving bricks,
loading unloading, adding cow dung/rice husks,
    clay over the vaults
  • Due to its porosity exterior walls should be
plastered with cement or lime based mixture
  • Floors can be filled with fired product,
interiors walls can be plastered according to
    budget

7
Conclusion / Materials for Future
  • An Appropriate cost energy efficient technology
    that has a great future.
  • Contributing to sustainable development
  • Uses semi-skilled manpower
  • Technology is easily adaptable and transferable
  • The energy and monetary costs are much lower
  • The vibratory atmosphere are very positive
  • Variations of soil quality and hence blocks
    quality may suffer
  • Soil with poor characteristics can cause
    shrinkages and cracks
  • Mud buildings are vulnerable to unseasonable
rains when a large quantity of mud products has
    to be protected

8
Finding connectivity
  • A connection to Builders Yard ????
  • Nucleus of entirely different and more personal
    relationship between builder and community.
  • In the case of Auroville, builder and community
is same self dependency for housing
    construction
  • Very organic in nature
