Title: Principles of Art

1
Principles of Art
  • C-BUMPER

2
The principles of art help artists plan their art
and think about how other people will react to
the artwork.
3
The principles are balance, contrast, movement,
pattern, rhythm, emphasis, and unity.
4
  • Understanding the elements and principles of art
helps people talk and think about art.

5
Contrast
  • Contrast creates excitement and interest in
artwork. Two things that are very different have
    a lot of contrast.

6
  • Created by differences in colors, values,
    textures.

7
  • White and black have the greatest contrast.
Complementary colors also have high contrast.

8
Artists use high contrast to make something show
up.

10
Artists may choose low contrast for a softer
look, as Claude Monet did in this painting of a
bridge.
11
Balance
  • The distribution of visual weight in a work of
    art

12
Artists think about how to make their works
balanced by using elements such as line, shape
and color. There are several ways to balance an
artwork
13

Symmetrical (formal) balance means both sides of
an imaginary line are the same.
14
Asymmetrical (informal) balance means each side
of an imaginary line are different yet equal.
15
Radial balance means lines or shapes grow from a
center point.

UNITY
  • Unity is the feeling that everything in the work
of art works together and looks like it fits.
  • The elements work as a team.

18
Gustave Caillebotte used shape to create unity.

Rhythm
  • Rhythm is the repeated movement
  • of the elements.

42
The artwork stays active and exciting by using a
variety of elements.

Movement and rhythm work together like musical
beats.
