Stations chosen and revisions made Station 2
Health Revised the 2004 version of
identification of written scenarios of dog
diseases which participants found time-consuming
and difficult, to disease symptom cards which
included a photograph and bulleted descriptions
of each illness.
14
STATION 2 HEALTH - DISEASE IDENTIFICATION
25 points Exhibitor will draw 6
disease/parasite photo cards out of the 13
placed face down on the table. The exhibitor will
then read the symptoms and correctly identify the
related health problem as described or shown by
matching with the correct disease name label. You
may need to read or help read for some
exhibitors. Each correctly identified disease is
worth 4 points. Exhibitors who correctly
identify all 6 diseases will receive 1 bonus
point. This is already factored into the
scorecard.

2005 OHIO STATE JR. FAIR DOG SKILLATHON STATIONS
SCORING PROCEDURES Each station is worth 25
points and the entire skillathon is worth 100
points. DO NOT GIVE OUT ANSWERS OR SCORES FOR ANY
OF THE STATIONS! AT NO TIME SHOULD THE EXHIBITOR
HAVE THEIR SCORE SHEET! When exhibitors need to
choose cards, ALL cards should be placed face
down on the table or faced away from the
exhibitor. STATION 1 CONFORMATION (Ears, Eyes,
and Tails) - EYES 2 points Exhibitor will
draw 1 of the 4 RED photo cards placed faced down
on the table and then correctly identify the
selected card with the proper RED name label.
This should be completed twice, replacing the eye
name label (not picture) back to the pile as a
choice for the second selection. Each correctly
identified eye is worth 1 point. - EARS 2
points Exhibitor will draw 1 of the 6 PURPLE
photo cards placed face down on the table and
then correctly identify the selected card with
the proper PURPLE name label. This should be
completed twice, replacing the ear name label
(not picture) back to the pile as a choice for
the second selection. Each correctly identified
ear is worth 1 point. - TAILS 21 points
Exhibitor will draw 1 of the 11 GREEN tail
pictures placed face down on the table and then
correctly identify the selected card with the
proper GREEN name label. Repeat for a total of 7
pictures. Tail name labels (not pictures) should
be replaced to the pile after each tail is
identified. Each correctly identified tail is
worth 3 points. STATION 2 HEALTH - DISEASE
IDENTIFICATION 25 points Exhibitor will draw
6 disease/parasite photo cards out of the 13
placed face down on the table. The exhibitor will
then read the symptoms and correctly identify the
related health problem as described or shown by
matching with the correct disease name label. You
may need to read or help read for some
exhibitors. Each correctly identified disease is
worth 4 points. Exhibitors who correctly
identify all 6 diseases will receive 1 bonus
point. This is already factored into the
scorecard. STATION 3 POSTURES - POSTURE 25
points Exhibitor will be given 8 body posture
name tags and must match the names to the
correct body posture photos. Each correctly
identified posture is worth 3 points. One bonus
point will be added to exhibitors who correctly
identify all 8 body postures. This is already
factored into the scorecard. STATION 4
EQUIPMENT IDENTIFICATION AND GROOMING -
EQUIPMENT ID 17 points Exhibitor will draw 1
of 16 equipment name tags out of a box or
envelope. The exhibitor will then match the
chosen name tag to the correct photo. This should
be repeated for a total of 8 selections.
Equipment pictures (not name tags) should be
replaced to order after each is identified. Each
correctly identified equipment picture is worth 2
points. One bonus point will be added to
exhibitors who correctly identify all 8 pieces of
equipment. This is already factored into the
scorecard. - BATHING 8 points Exhibitor will
be given 8 grooming tags and will be asked to
place them in the correct order in which they
should bathe their dog. Each correctly placed tag
is worth 1 point until participant places a tag
in the wrong place, at which time all following
tags will not be counted into scoring. The
Superintendent should congratulate the exhibitor
and tally their score to determine if they need
to complete the tiebreaker station. DO NOT let
the participants see their score sheet. Scores
will be posted after the show. TIE-BREAKER
STATION - SYSTEMS 20 points Exhibitor will
draw 1 of the 13 systems placed faced down on the
table. The exhibitor will then read and answer
the four questions presented to them about the
system they chose. This should be completed five
times with five different systems, not replacing
the system back in the pile. Each correctly
answered system question is worth 1 point. -
INJECTION SITE 5 points Exhibitor will be
asked to demonstrate the most common subcutaneous
injection site for dogs using the model dog

  • Patience
  • Leadership
  • Willingness to serve

21
After the 2005 Dog Skillathon, Lisa and I
re-organized and saved all the material for use
in next years skillathon. Overall, the entire
project involved a large amount of work and
resources, but was very enjoyable and
educational. We received several good comments
about how the skillathon went this year, as well
as many good suggestions on how to improve it for
next year. All in all, it was a good experience
that taught me a lot about organizing, leading,
communicating, and preparing a large project.

Additional Experiences Activities from the
Internship
  • Meetings between internship supervisors,
    contacts, assistants, etc.
  • Assisted with the 2005 Ohio State Fair Rabbit and
    Horse Skillathons.

28
Quality of the Internship
  • Positive
  • Met many, many wonderful new people both on and
    off campus
  • Got to experience an office job
  • Made money
  • Gained and practiced communications skills
  • Used and expanded my creativity and computer
    skills
  • Negative
  • I learned I dont enjoy sitting in an office 8
hours a day I would do better with more
variety, windows, fresh air, and action.
  • I would have preferred better and faster
    communication between supervisors and interns.
  • There was often not enough work for two people,
and I felt like we wasted a lot of time trying to
come up with things to do.

29
A Look at the Future
  • Definitely WONT be planning on doing a full-time
    office job for awhile.
  • Look forward to hopefully having the opportunity
to assist with future 4-H events at the 2006 Ohio
    State Fair.
  • Plan to continue assisting with the planning,
organizing, and hosting of the Companion Animal
Science 4-H Leadership Academy in 2006.
