14MIL-STD-X129
- Draft MIL-STD-X129, Fire Resistance of U.S.
Naval Ships - Draft MIL-STD-X129 provides the detailed test
procedure and acceptance criteria for the fire
resistance (i.e., prevention of fire spread
through a boundary) for divisions (e.g.,
bulkheads and overheads/decks) and their
penetrations on U.S. Navy ships. - Institutes two Classes of Fire Resistant
Divisions - N-Class N-Class Divisions are those divisions
(bulkheads and decks) that are designed to
protect against structural failure and prevent
the passage of fire and smoke when exposed to a
rapid rise hydrocarbon fire exposure (Class B).
The minimum fire test duration is 30 minutes. In
addition, N-Class divisions are designed to
prevent excessive temperature rise for a
designated test period such as 30 minutes (N-30).
- AN-Class AN-Class Divisions are those divisions
(bulkheads and decks) that are designed to
protect against structural failure and prevent
the passage of fire and smoke when exposed to an
IMO A. 754(18) fire exposure (Class A). For all
AN-Class divisions, including those with
penetrations, the test duration is a minimum of
60 minutes. In addition, AN-Class divisions are
designed to prevent excessive temperature rise
for a designated test period such as 60 minutes
(AN-60).

- Fire Resistant Divisions
- N-30 Unrestricted Application means that
insulation is installed either on both sides or
on the non fire side to meet the requirements for
temperature rise during the fire test. - N-30 Restricted Application means that
insulation is installed on the side from where
fire threat is anticipated. The division is
classified as Fire Resistant only in one
direction, from the fire side where the
insulation is placed. - N-0 Steel is inherently (without insulation) N-0
when used in thickness greater than 4.5 mm with
suitable scantlings. N-0 means it prevents
structural collapse and passage of flame and
smoke. - Aluminum melts when exposed to Class A or B fire,
and hence requires insulation for any kind of
fire resistance rating.

19Bonded Fasteners
- The U.S. Navy is considering attaching furniture
items to studs that are adhesively bonded to the
ship boundaries as an alternative to welded
studs for installing specific USS WASP and LPD-19
berths and lockers. - It is believed that this technology could
provide significant cost/time savings benefits
for ship overhauls and repairs. - This technology could also provide deployed ships
with the capability to perform repairs or
installations that are currently difficult or
impossible to perform with the current welded
studs which require fire watch for hot works. - Ser 05P4/xxx (Under review) provides the fire
performance requirements of adhesively bonded
studs used to mount furniture items to ship
boundaries. Ship boundaries may consist of steel,
aluminum, or composites. - Adhesively bonded studs may be permitted in
compartments outfitted with sprinklers. In
addition, the boundary containing the bonded
studs must have at least an N-30 fire resistance
rating or the adjacent compartments must be
outfitted with sprinklers.
