Comfort and Control Systems

• Seat position controls
• Adjustments that put you in proper driving
  position
• Steering Wheel
• Many are adjustable to fit height and to see
  dials and road
• Air conditioner
• Allows for comfort and removes humidity from car
• Air Vents
• Provide fresh air flow through car

Controlling Movement

• Ignition Switch
• Acc - runs accessories
• Lock- locks steering wheel
• Off-turns systems off
• On-turns electrical systems on
• Start- draws power from battery to start car
• Automatic Transmission
• Park-Locks transmission, position for starting
• Reverse-makes the car go backwards
• Neutral-allows car to roll free
• Drive-gear normally used while driving
• Low 1-2-used for steep grades or more power

• Manual Transmission
• Three to 5 speeds normally
• Clutch
• used in shifting manual transmission
• Steering wheel
• controls direction of front wheels
• Accelerator
• applies fuel to engine for more power
• Cruise Control
• Optional feature that allows you to maintain a
  steady speed

• Brake pedal
• allows you to slow or stop car
• power brakes require less pressure to operate
• Parking brake
• used to keep a parked car from rolling
• located in center console or left of brake pedal
• dont forget to release before moving

Visibility

• Lights
• help you to see better at night
• can be dim or bright
• allows you to be seen (DRL)
• Windshield Wipers
• Clears water and debris from windows
• use washer to add water to dirty windows
• Low, fast, variable
• Sun visors
• May be used to block out sun, dont block view

• Defroster
• clears moisture from inside of car, newer cars
  automatically start air conditioner
• Rearview Side-view mirrors
• provide vision to the rear of the vehicle
• there will still be blind spots, must use head
  checks

Safety Features

• Safety belts
• Best is shoulder/lap belts
• reduce risk of being killed by over 50
• Air Bags
• automatic restraint system
• do not reduce the need for seatbelts!!!
• Head restraints
• adjust to help prevent whiplash
• Door locks
• Keep uninvited people out of your car

• Reminds you to remove your keys

• Lock you car from intruders, gas cap, dont

Information Communication

• Speedometer Odometer
• tells you how fast and how far you have gone
• Fuel gauge
• How much fuel do you have
• Alternator gauge or light
• informs you how your charging system is
• Temperature gauge
• Lets you know if your engine is too hot
• Oil Pressure gauge or light
• gives oil pressure, if comes on STOP!!!

• Brake warning light
• Warns you your brakes are worn
• Other lights
• Parking brake- tells you brake is engaged
• High-Beam-tells high beams on
• ABS, Air Bag, Seat belt
• Taillights
• Brake lights-tell others when you apply brakes
• Red taillights allow to be seen from rear
• Flashing turn signal warns others you are turning
• White back up lights come on while backing

• Turn signals
• both on front and rear of car
• Emergency flashers
• warn others you are having problems
• Parking lights
• used when parked along side of road only, use
  only while parked not driving
• Horn
• use to alert other people of your presence, not
  to get your friends out of bed.

Checks ProceduresBefore entering

• Surrounding area
• look for children animals, objects, leaks
• Wheels
• check low tires, which way they are turned
• Car body
• Check for damage, scrape snow from windows
• Under the hood
• fluid levels, hose belt condition
• Getting into car
• load from passenger side, walk towards traffic

• Close lock doors
• insert key into ignition
• adjust seat
• adjust head restraint
• adjust mirrors
• check inside of windows
• make sure all objects are secured
• familiarize with all control devices
• fasten seatbelts, including passengers
