  • Olivio A. Lopes
  • Olivio A. Lopes 1921 - 2006 EAST LONGMEADOW -
    Olivio Americo Lopes, 85, passed away Monday May
    15, 2006 in a local hospital. He is survived by
    his wife of 62 years Lois Carolyn (Smith) Lopes
    of East Longmeadow. Born March 10, 1921 in New
    Bedford MA, he was the son of Jose Maria and
    Palmira (Ferreira) Lopes. In addition to his wife
    Lois, Olivio is survived by his daughter Carolyn
    L. Barkley and her husband William of Virginia
    Beach VA a grandson Kelley Powell and his wife
    Kim of Roanoke, VA and three great-granddaughters
    Megan, Samantha, and Mackenzie. Olivio was a
    veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army Air
    Corps in England and France as a Staff Sgt.
    attached to the 370th Air Services Group. Mr.
    Lopes, a graduate of Bridgewater State Teachers
    College, received his M.S. in English from
    Middlebury College, Middlebury VT. He received a
    John Hay Fellowship to Harvard University. Olivio
    then taught English at Dighton and North
    Attleborough High Schools before coming to
    Longmeadow High School, where he was Chair of the
    English Department from the school's opening in
    1955 until 1983. Following his retirement from
    teaching, he and his wife were summer residents
    of Fulbrook, Oxfordshire, England, where he wrote
    and published a collection of poetry.

  • OSullivans donated 25 of all receipts that
