    message conversation with the contact.

1. Add Contacts
  • Click Add a Contact.
  • Complete the Add a Contact form. Select
company name to search for the contact on your
    corporate network. Click on Next.
  • The Search Results window will display the
contact. If its the right contact, click on Next
and then Finish. Your contact has now been added
to the All Contacts pane in the Windows
    Messenger 5 client.
  • Please note You can group your contacts by
category for ease of locating co-workers,
partners, suppliers, etc. The maximum number of
contacts allowed by Windows Messenger 5.1 is 150.
  • In the Conversation window that opens, type your
message in the bottom pane and click Send.

4. My Status
3. Sharing Files or the Desktop
My Status is one of the key features in Windows
Messenger 5. When you sign into Windows Messenger
5, you register your status and effectively send
updates to anyone who has added you to his or her
Windows Messenger 5 contacts.
You can collaborate on a file or share your
desktop in real time, without files being loaded
on both PCs.
  • In the screen on the left, notice that
  • Brian is Online in Windows Messenger 5.
  • Cynthia is signed in, but has set her status to
Away so you know not to send messages to her.
  • Mike is currently Offline and is not signed in to
    the service.
  • In the Windows Messenger 5 client, double-click
the online contact you want to share a file or
    desktop with.
  • In the Conversation client, click Start
Application Sharing. When your contact accepts
your invitation, the Sharing client will
    automatically run.
  • The Sharing client will contain all the
applications and files you currently have open.
Select the file you wish to share and click
    Share.
  • A new window will run on your contacts screen
showing the file or application you are sharing.
Minimize any Windows Messenger 5 conversations
you are not using and keep the Conversation
client to one side of your screen, or it will
    block your contacts view.
  • If you want to share more than one file or
application, its easier to share your desktop
instead. When sharing one file, your contact can
    see only that file.
  • To let your contact make changes in a shared
    document, click Allow Control.

To change My Status You can change your status
information from within Windows Messenger 5 by
selecting File ? My Status (you can also
right-click the Windows Messenger 5 icon in the
notification area of the Start taskbar) and
selecting either Online, Busy, Be Right Back,
Away, On The Phone, Out To Lunch, or Appear
Offline.
  • 5. Transferring Files
  • You can transfer files in real time by
  • Dragging and dropping the file onto your IM
    conversation
  • OR
  • Selecting File ? Send a File or Photo.
  • The recipient must accept the transfer to receive
    the file.
  • A link appears in the recipients IM window
that opens his or her download folder. If you
would like to customize the location where your
downloads are saved, within Windows Messenger 5
go to Tools ? Options ? Preferences and update
the folder location under File Transfer.
