3Why the Focus on Middle Years?
- Students in the Middle Years are facing many
changes - Physical maturing, changes in body
- Emotional hormones, insecurity
- Social friendships, pecking order
- Learning moving from concrete to abstract
- Others

- Lack of understanding since students dont ask
for help - Disengagement with school
- Middle years dip in academic performance
- major problems with engagement!!!
5How do we help kids improve engagement in
learning ?
- Build up students self-esteem!
- Use hands-on activities as much as possible
- it helps them understand!
- Tailor it to their needs!
- Focus on pedagogy make it rewarding!
- Think about teaching/learning styles!
- Explicit, systematic teaching of
Literacy/Numeracy. - Make it fun!

stating the requisites of each subject - all external examinations will be based on what
is written in the syllabus - How well do YOU know your syllabus?
