Academic Learning Support
Extramural students can make appointments at all
the Student Learning Centres for one-to-one
consultations for writing or study skills if they
live near a campus or are on a campus for a
contact course. Student Learning Centre,

Auckland (Albany) Student Learning Centre, email

Information on writing and study skills is also
available online.
The Online Writing and Learning Link (OWLL) is a
website with a wide range of learning and writing
tips for both undergraduates and post-graduates.
This link has many handouts which can be
downloaded.

Specific Academic Learning Support for Extramural
Students
Regional visits for study and exam skills
workshops. These are in March, May, July/August
and October. To see the Timetable for the

Online Pre-reading service. You can submit an
assignment by email to receive feedback on the
structure and style before you submit it to your
course marker.
Online Connection - a real time means of getting
an answer to a query after hours. This service
is available Evenings Monday to Thursday 6.00
9.00 pm Sunday 3.00 6.00 pm

Academic Support for Maori Extramural Students
Palmerston North You can contact Te Hononga Mai
Tawhiti on 0508 439 677 extension 2712. Expect
some invitations to come to study skills
workshops. The Whakapakari Akonga mentoring
programme puts you in touch with an experienced
student mentor in your region. The Tawhiti
Whakapakari WebCT site lets you chat and form
study groups with other Maori students at all
levels of study and from across different

Auckland (Albany) If you live in the Auckland
area you can also contact Lisa Stewart or Bruce
George for help and advice. Call in to Building
46, Oteha Rohe or phone extn 9669 for Lisa or

Wellington Averil Martin welcomes enquiries from
Maori students who live in the wider Wellington
area. Drop in and see her at Student Learning
Services or give a her a call on extn 6550.

    is located in the YFC building between Totara and
    Matai Halls of Residence.)

Personal Support
Counselling The Counselling Resources on the Web
(CROW) contains information on issues such as
anxiety, stress management and balancing the
competing demands of life and study. Extramural
students can contact student counsellors by email
and visit them when on campus for a contact

online to help students choose a career. This
helps students focus on their goals and choose a

Personal Support
Disability Services Services are provided for
domestic extramural students with physical,
sensory, learning and medical impairments. This
includes students with long term injury or
illness or mental health issues. Students can
contact the Disability Student Advisor or
Coordinator on each campus to discuss the types
of support available for study and examinations.

Medical Services Extramural students can use the
medical centres if they live locally or are on
one of the campuses for a contact course. Fees

Chaplaincy For pastoral, personal or spiritual
guidance, extramural students can contact the
chaplains, either by phoning or visiting them if
you are on one of the campuses. Email

Sport, Leisure and Culture Services Extramural
students may also use the gymnasium facilities on
the campuses. There are fees for the weights
rooms and classes (e.g. aerobics and spin) and
the receptionist will be able to give you the

for answers to who? How/ and where? questions.
They can give you maps as well as information
about ID cards, fees, academic records,

A final word
Attending a contact course can really increase
your involvement and understanding of a course.
You can clarify the aspects that have been
puzzling you, meet the team that teaches the
course, and mix with other extramural students,
some of whom will become lifelong friends.
