Local Context
  • Wigan LEA, via the Behaviour Support Team, have
    supported a number of schools over the last 5
    years to develop their own Nurture Groups.
  • The natural development is now to look at
    integrating the support between mainstream
    schools, PRUs and special school.

Project Summary
Aims Outcomes Sought
  • To pilot a two day training programme for staff
    running nurture groups in Wigan - this pilot
    short course provides a basic introduction to the
    philosophy and practice of nurture group work.
    It is ideal for staff who may have had some
    experience of working in a nurture group or who
    are about to begin working in a group. Deliver
    seamless understanding and management of pupils
    with social, emotional and behavioural
    difficulties between mainstream primary/secondary
    schools - KS2/3 PRU and Primary EBD special
    school.
  • To skill up staff to use the same
    diagnostic/development tools - the Boxall
    profile, to effectively assess/set
    targets/evaluate pupil progress.
  • Provide pupils with consistent management/support
    structures within each establishment and between
    establishments to promote inclusion.
  • To promote enhanced teaching and learning as a
    direct result of the nurturing process (research
    proven - DfES paper Excellence for all Children
    1997).
  • To develop CPD for all staff involved across
    establishments.
  • Understanding of early learning and attachment
    theory.
  • Develop ways to work with parents.
  • Developing nurturing schools through nurture
    group staff cascading this training to other
    staff within schools to promote inclusion.
  • To link into nurture group network 'kite mark' to
    ensure quality standard of provision - to address
    social, emotional, behavioural and curricular
    needs of the learner.
  • Behaviour support team to help educational
    psychology service develop training
  • CAMHS nurture group network, 10 primary schools,
    7 secondary schools, 1 EBD special school, 1 MLD
    special school PRU staff.
  • Smoother transition between mainstream / PRU /
    EBD / MLD provision (both ways).
  • Improvement of pupils emotional well being
    enabling them to access learning more readily.
  • School staff own CPD enhanced and understanding
    of pupils needs.
  • School staff as learners accessing training
    becoming teachers of other staff in their school
    enhancing the nurturing inclusive environment.

    and social and emotional needs has been clarified
  • The Boxall profile is being used to identify and
    target pupils specific needs by a wider group of
    professionals
  • Staff are now writing Individual Education Plans
    linked to the Boxall profiles
  • Staff have a greater ability to advise other
    staff on strategies to use within the classroom
    with individuals who display social, emotional or
    behavioural difficulties
  • Change in practice based on researched evidence
    of good practice now underway
  • A smoother transition between mainstream, PRU,
    EBD and MLD provision is expected
  • Improved communication and clarified language
    between professionals working with children
    displaying a range of difficulties.

  • Development of sense of self, belonging and
    trust.
  • Improved adult / peer relationships and improved
    social skills
  • Improved organisational and concentration skills
    and improved speaking and listening skills
  • Improved curriculum focus from the pupils
  • Happier and more confident transition from
    primary to secondary education for those
    identified as vulnerable
  • Improved transition between mainstream, PRU, EBD
    and MLD due to clarity and continuation of
    targets and strategies through the common
    approach of using the Boxall profile.
  • Parents engaging in school in a positive way.
