Title: Functional Movement

1
Functional Movement Injury Prevention
  • Stuart Butler MSc MCSP
  • Chartered Physiotherapist

2
Functional Movement in Running
  • How Do We Run?
  • What Causes Injuries?
  • Can we decrease Injuries and Improve Performance?

3
HOW DO WE RUN????
4
One Foot In front of the Other!!
  • Same principles
  • Individual variables

5
Running Mechanics
6
Walking Vs Running
7
WHAT CAUSES INJURIES??
8
Average Track and Field Injuries
  • Approx. 70 Track 30 Field Split
  • Approx.
  • 30 Acute
  • 70 Gradual Onset
  • Lower limb (70)

9
Average Track and Field Injuries
  • 75 in Training
  • Average injury causes loss of 7 -14 days
  • Likely to me muscle strain / ligament sprain

10
Therefore.......
  • Most Injuries are due to repetitive mistakes
  • Primarily restrictions in movement
  • And / or
  • Mistakes or errors in the movement

11
Functional Movement Screen
  • How Can we Look at the Actions used during
    Running?

12
Dysfunction of the Kinetic Chain
  • Excessive Pronation
  • Knee Turning in
  • Thigh turning in
  • Hip dropping
  • Shoulders uneven

13
Break it down.....
  • Components...
  • Squat
  • Single Leg Stance (Hurdle Step Over)
  • Lunge

14
And then try and analyse them in functional
positions
15
Squat
  • Key Points
  • Knees over toes
  • Knees forward
  • Flex at waist
  • Back straight

17
Hurdle Step / Single leg Stance
  • BALANCE
  • Knee Forward and over toes
  • Hips Level

19
Lunge
  • Lower Limb Mobility
  • Trunk Stability

20
COMMON ISSUES
  • And what can we do to prevent injury and improve
    performance....

21
Trunk Rotation
  • Ability to rotate Right and Left
  • Aim to be symmetrical
  • Must sit tall, and lock the pelvis still

22
Hip Extension
  • Difficult to assess
  • Important in Gait
  • Best tested in Thomas position
  • Can potentially measure distance from foot to the
    floor
  • Must keep opposite knee pulled into chest

23
Hip Extension
24
Lunge Stretch
  • Lunge Position
  • Push hips forward
  • Lean out to opposite side

25
Medial Rotation (Hip)
  • Often associated with tight gluets
  • Again important in Gait, especially in single leg
stance, both for support and propulsion
  • Asymmetries
  • Can measure distance between ankles

26
Gluets Stretches
  • Squeeze - 10s
  • Relax - 20s

27
Loss of Dorsiflexion
  • Ability to pull for toes towards your body- Calf
    Tightness
  • Asymmetries
  • Can measure distance from wall to big toe,
    keeping heal on the floor

28
Calf Stretch
  • Heal Down
  • Straight Leg
  • Bent Leg
  • Hanging off bottom Step

29
Summary
  • Functional Movement Screen takes basic movements
and allows physios / coaches to spot potential
areas of weakness that can potentially decrease
the occurrence of injury and improve performance

30
  • knee below hip

  • box
  • heel eversion
  • knee past foot
  • heel raise
