People With Disabilities
The federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is the
first known statute or regulation to address
disabilities, people with disabilities and the
government's position with regard to both. The
definition contained in the Rehab Act uses
functional terms, and the inability to perform 2
or more of 11 life skills, as the basic
prerequisite for being disabled. (George
Gladis, interviewed Saturday, February 15, 2003)

Why Is This An Important Topic?

  • By interacting with people with disabilities, you
obtain familiarity with a socially unknown
    community.
  • Adapted to the needs of individuals
  • (ie. communication skills, patience,
    interaction, etc.)

  • They had so much energy! So much vitality! So
much zest for living! ... Let no one ever again
say to him that lepers were just apathetic
people, a bundle of rags and tatters, a
collection of derelicts resigned to their lot.
These men and women were life itself
  • (Lapierre, The City of Joy, 292).

What Did We Learn?
You begin to find who you really are. The
implication is clear enough We become human only
in the company of other human beings. And this
involves both opening our hearts and giving voice
to our deepest convictions (Loeb, Soul of a
Citizen, 22). As Rilke and the Dalai Lama
suggest, satisfaction can be found amid the most
testing of situations (32).
