5What Is Tuberculosis?
- It is an infection caused by bacteria.
- The name comes from the word tubercles which are
the small, hard lumps that form when the immune
system builds a wall round the TB bacteria. - It affects the lungs but can spread to other
organs in the body
6What Types of Tuberculosis Exist?
REACTIVATION TB
PRIMARY TB
Happens in people who have BEEN EXPOSED
BEFORE. Their Immune System gets weak and so the
TB can break out of the wall and cause ACTIVE
DISEASE
Happens in people who have NEVER had it
before. It is their FIRST EXPOSURE to the TB
bacteria.

- Through the air
- When someone sneezes
- When someone coughs
8What Are The Symptoms?
- Coughing for more than 3 weeks
- Weight loss
- Lack of appetite
- Constant fatigue
- Night sweats
- Fevers

9How Can You Know You Have TB?
- To diagnose TB,
- See a doctor
- He will perform
- The tuberculin (Mantoux) skin test
- X-Rays of your lungs
- A culture test of your saliva
- Encourage participants to attend TB screenings
- whenever they come to their neighborhood
10How Do You Treat It?
- LEVEL 1 Those who are infected but dont have
the active disease ? ISONIAZID for 9 months - LEVEL 2 Those with the active disease get
multiple ANTIBIOTICS for 6 months
11How Can You Prevent TB?
- To prevent getting TB
- Get immunized!
- Get your children infants immunized with BCG!
- Stay away from people known or suspected to have
TB - Attend TB screenings as often as you can when
Test Centers are set up in your neighborhood
12How Can You Prevent TB?
- To prevent spreading it to others
- Cover your mouth when coughing
- Cover your nose when you sneeze
- Avoid shaking hands with people
- Wash your hands frequently, especially after
sneezing and coughing
