Objectives
  • Present the product that failed
  • Establish the reasons it failed
  • Provide input on how it might not have failed

As you can see, it was a no-brainer to wait a few
years for a system that would double in speed and
performance.

Background
  • The Sega Dreamcast was introduced in the US in
September of 1999. It stayed on the marked a
short 15 months before Sega announced they would
halt production of the system due to decreased
sales. Sega also announced they would not make
another system, rather they were switching to
video game production for the dream cast and for
    their competitors systems.
  • With video game systems its important you
release a new system each time your competitor
does in order to stay in the running. Sega did
this with the Saturn when Sony introduced their
PlayStation. Sega then waited 4 years and came
out with the Dreamcast. For its time, it was
great. It was basically an upgrade of the Saturn
and it surpassed its current opposition. But it
    still failed

6
What Could Have Been Changed?
  • The Dreamcast, though it was better than what was
currently on the market, was introduced in a time
when consumers were greatly anticipating the
release of 3 new systems. All 3 systems looked
to be much better than the Dreamcast. The
anticipation of the Sony PlayStation 2, Microsoft
Xbox, and the Nintendo GameCube was great enough
to keep most gamers from buying the Dreamcast and
hold off for the big boys soon to come.
  • If Sega would have introduced it sooner, or
waited a few years and made some improvements the
    system might have succeeded.

Conclusion
  • The Dreamcast failed due to a lack of speed and
basically the lack of giving gamers a reason to
buy it. The time it was introduced was the main
reason it never became a popular system.
