Are All-Season Tires Worth Buying?
  • If you come from a place that experiences severe
changes of seasons, you need to make sure that
your vehicle have two sets of tires for winter
and summer. Alternatively, you can purchase
all-season tires that are meant to be used
year-round. Most cars come equipped with
all-season tires, so you may not need to buy new
ones after all. They are usually indicated by the
MS markings on the sidewalls which stand for mud
and snow. They should not be confused with
all-weather tires that are also meant to be used
    throughout the year.

  • Even though the all-season tires are not designed
to be best in a specific weather condition, they
can be so great if you come from a place that
    experiences moderate weather conditions
throughout the year. The MS symbol that they
feature means that they are approved for use in
mud and snow. They will provide traction on dry
roads and light snow. However, when the weather
becomes extremely cold such that ice forms on the
road, driving with all-season tires will not be
such a good idea. In that case, you will be
better off with dedicated winter tires.

  • The name all-season does not mean that these
tires can provide great performance in all four
seasons of the year. Instead, it means that these
tires are a compromise. When they were being
designed, wet grip was traded in order to gain
some mobility on snow packed roads. They can give
you adequate performance throughout the year and
save you the trouble of changing to winter and
summer tires every now and then. Once you install
them on your vehicle, you will not need to remove
them until they wear out or get a puncture.

  • You need to understand that the mobility and grip
that all-season tires are designed to provide in
snow is not the same as what dedicated winter
tires can provide. The all-season tires have less
damp road traction compared to a dedicated winter
tire. So if you want to drive safely and
comfortably on challenging winter roads, winter
tires will be required if you want to have good
grip and control of your vehicle. If you come
from a place where it never snows, then you can
survive with the all-season tires all year-round.
