7Theory Review
- Behaviorism operant conditioning
(reinforcement), modeling imitation
subsequent approximations - Nativism Universal Grammar, Language Acquisition
Device, focus on syntax, unconscious discovery
of underlying rules. - Language Socialization Development of language
via social interactions AND development of
cultural knowledge via development of language.
8Sociocultural Theory
- Language Socialization is related to (draws upon)
this theory. - This theory is based on work by Vygotsky in
1920-1930s in former Soviet Union. - Portions of his work were first translated into
English in 1962 (Thought and Language). - Work continues to expand on the early work of
Vygotsky and other Soviet psychologists.
9Important Aspects of Sociocultural Theory
- Individual cognitive development occurs as a
result of social processes cannot be separable
from social interactions. - Cognitive development is mediated by
psychological tools, such as language and other
means of communication (eye gaze, gestures,
pictures, etc.). - Joint productive activities are where learning
takes place novices and experts working
together toward a common goal.
10Aspects of Sociocultural Theory, cont.
- The zone of proximal development (ZPD) is that
conceptual development that is just out of reach
of a childs current independent performance, but
which s/he can reach with assistance. It is the
area of development that that we need to be
targeting, as its not completely out of reach,
but also, not redundant.
Example Being spotted in a physical activity,
not just practicing what you can already do or
trying something that way out of your reach.
