16East Coast Connectivity
- IP Services
- IRNC 10 Gig circuit between Amsterdam and New
York City - Amsterdam side is a GEANT2 router
- NYC side is MAN LAN
- Supports Peering between GEANT2 and MAN LAN
connectors, including Internet2 and ESnet - GEANT2 funded 10 Gig circuit between Frankfort
and Washington, DC - Frankfort side is GEANT2 router
- Washington, DC side is NGIX-East
- Supports Peering between GEANT2 and NGIX-East
connectors, including Internet2 and ESnet
17East Coast Connectivity, continued
- Circuit Services - support for P2P circuits as
needed - IEEAF 10 Gig circuit between Amsterdam and New
York City - Amsterdam side is the NetherLight HDXc
- New York City side is the MAN LAN HDXc
- SURFnet 10 Gig circuit between Amsterdam and New
York City - Amsterdam side is the NetherLight HDXc
- New York City side is the MAN LAN HDXc
- Internet2 HOPI 10 Gig circuit between London and
New York City - London side is Alcatel Equipment
- NYC side is MAN LAN HDXc
18East Coast Connectivity, continued
- Circuit Services - support for P2P circuits as
needed - GEANT2 circuit between Europe and Washington, DC
- Connects to Alcatel on the European side
- Connects to NGIX-East Ciena equipment on the
Washington, DC side - GEANT2 circuit between Paris and New York City
- Connects to Alcatel on the Paris side
- Connects to HDXc in MAN LAN on the NYC side
- MAN LAN and NGIX-East connected to Atlantic Wave
19Dynamic Circuit Services in Internet2
- Intra domain work
- HOPI
- The Ciena Network
- Eventually, the Infinera Platform
- Inter domain work
- Collaborations with other networks
- Following and participating in standards bodies
20Internet2 Network Infrastructure with Multiple
Services
Routed IP Network
Router Layer
Ethernet Layer
Switched SONET Layer (vcat, lcas)
SONET Switched Network
Provisioned Services
Switched WDM Optical Layer
Ethernet VLAN Switched Network (i.e., HOPI)
Multi-Layer GMPLS Networks
Separate (Peering) Control Plane Instantiations
for each of the above
21Intra Domain work
- Challenges
- Multi-vendor environment
- Multi-layer environment
- Current Development
- Concentrating on the Ciena and HOPI platforms,
each on a single wave on the Internet2 DWDM
Platform - Also having discussions with Infinera about
Virtual DWDM platform - HOPI has been in place for several years, and
functions as a test-bed - The Ciena network is to provided persistent
services to applications - For example, the LHC project
22Ciena Control Plane Work
- What is the best way to control the Inter domain
network - Implementation should support a large number of
platforms, eventually - Evolving to a UNI-2.0 interface at this time
- It is currently a TL-1 interface
- Thoughts about using proprietary interfaces have
been thoroughly discussed - Software platform should be extensible and vendor
independent - Tremendous support from Ciena on all aspects of
this project
23Inter Domain Development
- Primary collaboration is with the DICE group -
Dante (GEANT2), Internet2, CANARIE, and Esnet - Working closely with ESnet on interfacing OSCARS
and HOPI - involves AAA work, using OSCARS
interface - Reporting back progress to the GLIF and other
organizations - For example, Phosphorus, in coordination with the
SURFnet and University of Amsterdam participants - Also having discussions with JGN2
- Coordinating with OGF on various schema -
topology, path computation, signaling - Working with the appropriate standards bodies -
ITU, IETF, and OIF
