What are Bloodborne Pathogens?
  • HBV - hepatitis B virus
  • HCV - hepatitis C virus
  • HIV - human immunodeficiency virus.

What are HBV,HCV, HIV?
  • Hepatitis B (HBV)
  • Only confirmed by blood test
  • Attacks Liver
  • Effective vaccines
  • Cause death
  • Vaccination is available.
  • Survives at room temperature for 1 week or more
  • Hepatitis C (HCV)
  • Similar to hepatitis B
  • 75 show no symptoms
  • 85 chronically infected
  • Primary reason for liver transplant
  • HIV
  • Attacks immune system

Workplace BBP Transmission
  • Mucous membranes of mouth, eyes and nose
  • Broken areas of skin

What are the symptoms of BBP?
  • Some show no symptoms
  • Some experience
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fatigue
  • Jaundice
  • Loss of appetite
  • Occasional nausea

Exposure Control Plan
  • Assess situation
  • Apply pressure to wound, avoiding contact with
    blood
  • Have another employee notify first responders
  • Always wash hands after an incident
  • Report incident right away
  • Document any injury.

  • PPE will only protect you if used properly and
    correctly!
  • Make sure it fits correctly
  • Check to see if there is damage before use
  • If damaged report it and then you can dispose of
    it properly
