What are Bloodborne Pathogens?

• HBV - hepatitis B virus
• HCV - hepatitis C virus
• HIV - human immunodeficiency virus.

What are HBV,HCV, HIV?

• Hepatitis B (HBV)
• Only confirmed by blood test
• Attacks Liver
• Effective vaccines
• Cause death
• Vaccination is available.
• Survives at room temperature for 1 week or more

• Hepatitis C (HCV)
• Similar to hepatitis B
• 75 show no symptoms
• 85 chronically infected
• Primary reason for liver transplant

• HIV
• Attacks immune system
• Leads to aids
• Effective vaccines
• Causes Aids
• No cure for HIV or Aids once infected

Workplace BBP Transmission

• Mucous membranes of mouth, eyes and nose
• Broken areas of skin
• Objects that pierce skin.

Exposure does not mean youll automatically be
infected.

What are the symptoms of BBP?

• Some show no symptoms

• Some experience
• Abdominal pain
• Fatigue
• Jaundice
• Loss of appetite
• Occasional nausea
• Vomiting

Exposure Control Plan

• Assess situation
• Apply pressure to wound, avoiding contact with
  blood
• Have another employee notify first responders
• Always wash hands after an incident
• Report incident right away
• Document any injury.

• PPE is Personal Protective Equipment

PPE General Rules

• PPE will only protect you if used properly and
  correctly!
• Make sure it fits correctly
• Check to see if there is damage before use
• If damaged report it and then you can dispose of
  it properly

• Includes gloves, mask, eyewear, face shield,
  smock or apron
• Properly use, remove and maintain
• Throw out defective PPE
• Wash hands thoroughly after removing PPE.

• Reduces potential for exposure
• Maintenance and janitorial staff at possible risk
• Part of a good protection program.

Safe Work Procedures

• Wear proper PPE
• Be alert for sharp objects
• Never smash down overflowing containers with
  hands or feet
• Carry trash bags away from your body
• Properly dispose of contaminated items
• Dont attempt cleanup unless trained.

• Keep a safety-first attitude
• Take necessary actions to protect yourself
