Introduction
Why? To investigate moving to an entirely digital
design and build procedure in dental
technology How? Using 3D Scanning, advanced CAD
and SLM Obstacles overcome Case studies time
consuming, finding our own way! Successes Many
cases done, test fitted to patients and published
4
Scanning
Using optical scanning including structured white
light and laser scanning

7
FreeForm CAD
FreeForm enables the design of complex forms and
shapes and utilises a haptic feedback device that
enables true 3D work in all axes

11
Surveying
Using FreeForm CAD parting line function to
perform virtual surveying Just like physical
surveying
12
Design
PDR pioneered full computer-aided design of RPD
frameworks

14
Design
All design done according to best practice
15
Design
All design done according to best practice Design
incorporates all features Rests, clasps, relief,
acrylic lines, connectors, etc.

Design
17
Design
Final design of RPD framework with all relevant
features added ready for direct manufacture
18
Direct Manufacture
The framework needs supports during the build
process The framework is oriented so supports do
not interfere with the fitting surface
19
Direct Manufacture
Selective Laser Melting (SLM)

Conclusions
The collaborative research has demonstrated that
the digital design and direct manufacture of RPD
frameworks is entirely feasible Scanning,
surveying, design and manufacture have been
demonstrated to be feasible, practical and
efficient The findings have been subject to peer
review and widely published Dental laboratories
are now seriously investigating this route and
commercial implementation is imminent
30
Conclusions
SensAble now offer a dedicated version of their
software for dental applications
