late 19th century. These small cakes started
being called cupcakes because of the ingredients
measured by the cupful. The traditional recipe of
pound cake was easy to remember for its pound of
butter, a pound of sugar, pound of flour, and
pound of eggs and the same goes for cupcakes. The
name cupcake came from how the recipe was
measured- 1 cup butter, 2 cups sugar, 3 cups
flour, and 4 eggs. Therefore, a cup of
cake! Earlier cupcakes were baked in teacups or
small clay pots before the multi-cup pans started
coming into use.

In England, cupcakes are called fairy cakes.
Fairy cakes use a lighter glace icing compared to
the butter cream used by American bakers,
therefore not exactly cupcakes but almost
cupcakes. They also are traditionally made with a
lighter sponge cake as opposed to the thicker
butter cakes used in our cupcakes.
