Title: Natalie
1Natalie
Natalie is a key stage 4 learner taking a
Foundation Diploma in manufacturing and product
design. She chose this because she has always
been interested in fashion and making clothes.
Her friends often say shes really good with
clothes. She seems to know instinctively what
clothes go well together. She always has really
interesting outfits and never seems to wear the
same clothes twice. She gets a lot of her clothes
from charity shops and car boot sales, and she is
brilliant at adapting them in numerous ways,
whether its cutting the bottom off a ball gown
to make a short skirt or changing a neckline to
match the latest style.

Project
Natalie spent three weeks in a factory which made
artificial fur for the garment industry. Her main
task was to bring different types of synthetic
yarn from the stores area to the area of the
factory where machines created the different
types of artificial fur. She also spent some time
in the quality control department. Having seen
how the fur was manufactured and the problems
that arose, she felt she had a much better
understanding of the merits and limitations of
the synthetic fur as a fashion material.

For her project Natalie created a dress and a top
for the end-of-term school fashion show (an
Enterprise activity involving the whole of her
year group.) She kept a detailed record of her
work, and presented her project as a portfolio
which contained not only the two garments but
also the patterns she had created and samples of
fabrics she had considered. She also submitted a
written report explaining her choice of fabrics,
the key design features of her two garments and
the production techniques she had used.
Progression route Natalie decided to pursue her
interest and talents in clothes manufacturing by
taking an ABC Level 1 / 2 Certificate in Sewing
and Textiles while working in her first full-time
job as a Sewing Machinist.
