Who does not love to get their hands on natural
gemstone jewelry, and it is kind of obvious why
that is the case. Not only is the gemstone
jewelry quite enchanting to look at and would
add to the appeal of the wearer, but they have
become an item that anyone can purchase
nowadays. There was a time when only royalty,
nobility, or other influential people could
afford gemstone jewelry. But unsurprisingly,
that is no longer the case. No one can even order
gemstone jewelry online without much
hassle. But while purchasing natural gemstones
has become more accessible, nearly everyone makes
a common mistake. And that mistake does not know
the difference between shapes and cuts. Yes,
there is a significant difference between the
cuts and shapes used in gemstones for jewelry
making. And while they are interrelated, one
should not confuse them as the same.

Gemstone cuts are a term used to define the
sparkle of the gemstone. Gemstones that are
tumbles and polished don't sparkle at all. Facets
(or flat planes) are cut into the gemstone
through lapidary. These facets reflect the light,
which results in the gemstone sparkle. The shape
of the gemstone, be it a quartz gemstone or
anything else, is its outline when viewed from
above. Here are some of the more popular
gemstone shapes and cuts.
Gemstone Cuts
  • Cabochon Cuts It is one of the most popular
tourmaline gemstone and other gemstone cuts. The
term is based on a Norman French word 'caboche',
which translates to the head. In this, the
gemstone is polished and tumbled till they have a
smooth and gleaming shine. Unlike other cuts,
    cabochon cuts are not cut.
  • Step Cut Step cut is created by adding facets in
horizontal. The facets are added like steps of a
staircase and showcase the color and clarity of
    the stone.
  • Brilliant Cut As the name suggests, the
Brilliant cut is simply brilliant but quite
complex. Multiple facets are placed on the
gemstone at regular angles in this cut. It
ensures the maximum sparkle of the gemstone.
  • Divine Cut It is a variation of the brilliant
cut, with the flat of the gemstone being smaller
than the brilliant-cut gemstones. That results in
    a more parachute-like gemstone.
  • Rose Cut One of the oldest and most traditional
cuts still used today. The bottom has a cabochon
base in this cut, and the top is faceted with
    regular triangles.

Gemstone Shapes
  • Round Naturally, we must start with the classic
and most commonly used gemstone shape round. It
is an enduringly popular design and is usually
paired with brilliant or rose cut.
  • Oval Another popular gemstone shape for gemstone
beads. Oval is the preferred choice for many
gemstone cutters. It balances the aesthetics and
commercial considerations and retains a large
amount of the carat weight as well.
  • Marquise Marquise or Navette is an excellent
companion with a brilliant cut. And while it is
typically more fragile, the shape maximizes the
    visible dimensions of the gemstone.
  • Heart The name shows that the gemstones are
heart-shaped when seen from the top. It
naturally has an added romantic element to it as
    well.
  • Pear It is the teardrop where one end is
rounded, and the other is pointy.
