Field Experience Focus
  • To acquaint teacher candidates with the
    TEACHING and LEARNING issues of P-12 students in
    public schools who do not speak English as a
    first language
  • To sensitize teacher candidates to the
    cultural, economic, social impact on P-12
    students who do not speak English but live in an
    English speaking environment.

Field Experience Facts
  • 15 hour Field Experience in a public school 12
    hours in school setting3 hours in training.
  • 2-3 hours per week for 5-8 weeks
  • Attend a training session on Friday, Sept 5 from
    830 to 100, Carmichael Student Center,
    University Rooms.
  • Sign up on line for your placement school
  • If your certifiction area is
  • A. Elementary. You may select any K-5
    placement.
  • B. Middle Grades. You must select a 4th or
    5th grade
  • placement.
  • C. High School. You may select any middle
    grades or
  • high school setting.
  • D. P-12 (Art, Music,PE, Foreign Language).
    You should
  • select an elementary or middle school
    setting. Depending
  • on the number of Ells in the school,
    you may or may not be
  • placed in your teaching area.

More Facts . . .
  • On September 18 or September 19
  • (1)Go to your placement school and pick
    up your
  • Placement/ Orientation Folder from
    the receptionist.
  • DRESS WELL
  • (2)Download, print and take to your
    placement school a copy of the Collaborating
    Teacher Packet, and your Contact Information.
    www.kennesaw.edu/education/ofe, click on EDUC
    2120, scroll to each item and print. Fill out and
    put it in a folder. Give to the receptionist.
  • Contact your CT and set up the first visit for
    the week of Sept 22.
  • Your first visit should be a two-hour
    observation.
  • After the initial observation, you and your CT
    will work out a schedule.
  • Cannot count for any other FX for any other class
  • Must complete the FX to pass the class
  • Notify your instructor if you drop !!!

Placement Arrangements
  • See Janice Traylor in the Office of Field
    Experiences, Kennesaw Hall, Room 3221 before
    August 25 if
  • (1) You are a full-time or part-time parapro or
    an ASP worker in a public school and would
    like to complete your FX at that school.
  • (2) You live outside KSUs nine partnership
    districts and would like to complete your FX in a
    school close to your home.
  • Return Signed forms to Office of Field Experieces
  • On or before Sept 1.

Field Experience Design
  • Teacher candidates must be actively engaged in
    learning activities with English Language
    Learners (ELLs) s most of the time.
  • First Visit should be a two hour Observation.

Suggested Activities
  • Tutor individual ELLs or groups
  • Assist collaborating teacher as he/she directs
  • Accompany individual ELLs to content classes and
    assist them.
  • Read to ELLs/listen to ELLs read.

  • Prepare materials for class
  • Help set up for class
  • Discuss best practices with ESOL teachers
  • Assist in ACCESS or W-APT testing procedures
    (under CT supervision)
  • Prepare a Diversity bulletin board, PowerPoint,
    ELL web page, etc.

  • Discuss with ELLs their educational and personal
    challenges
  • Assist with/ attend special programs in which
    ELLss are involved.
  • Attend extra-curricular activities in which ELLs
    students are involved (up to 3 hours can count)

How do I sign up for a school?
  • View on-line NOW the list of schools available
  • School will be listed with mapquest
    links.
  • Go to bcoe.kennesaw.edu/2120
  • Plan several choices of schools (they may fill
    quickly!)
  • Sign-up goes live at 1000 pm on September 8.
    Closes at 1000am on September 10.
  • Can change your mind, but you will always GET the
    last school you signed up for.
  • NO CHANGES or ADDITIONS after 1000am on Sept 10.
  • You need your ID to sign up
  • Print your confirmation
  • PLACEMENTS ARE FIRST COMEFIRST SERVED!

Orientation/Placement Packet
  • Go to your placement schools Front Office on
    Thursday, September 18 or Friday, September 19.
    DRESS WELL.
  • Identify yourself as a KSU student and pick up
    your packet from the receptionist.
  • Give the receptionist your folder containing your
    Contact Information and the Collaborating Teacher
    Packet.

Contact the Collaborating Teacher
  • It is your responsibility to contact the
    Collaborating Teacher and set up a day and time
    for your first visit.
  • First visit should be the Week of September 22
    and should be a two hour observation.
  • Use only your KSU email address (not your
    personal email) to correspond with the
    Collaborating Teacher.

  • Wear teacher clothes
  • Be on time and stay the full arranged time.
  • Everything you see and hear is confidential
  • Be pleasant to everyone
  • No cell phone, laptop, IPOD
  • MYSpace/FaceBook---Caution
  • Zero smoking (alcohol) hours before student
    contact
  • Your aim is to be a role model

Criminal History and Insurance
  • Must have clear criminal history and one million
    dollars of liability insurance to be eligible for
    participation in the field experience.
  • If EDUC 2120 is the first education course with a
    FX you have taken at KSU, you must
  • Go to www.kennesaw.edu/education/ofe
  • click on FE Eligibility, scroll to forms,
    print and complete these forms
  • - Consent Form
  • --Undergraduate Personal Affirmation
    Form
  • --Verification of Liability Insurance
    Form
  • See Q and Q to answer questions
  • RETURN ALL THREE FORMS to the Office of Field
    Experiences, Kennesaw Hall, Room 3216 before
    going to your second class.
